Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee defended First Lady Michelle Obama Wednesday from conservative critics who he said have painted her anti-obesity campaign as nothing more than "a government takeover of our dinner plates."
"She's been criticized unfairly by a lot of my fellow conservatives," Huckabee said at an event sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, adding that the criticism is more "a reflex" than "thoughtful expression."
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and conservative talk host Rush Limbaugh are among those who have slammed Michelle Obama's efforts as heavy handed.
"It's exactly what Republicans say they believe," Huckabee said of the first lady's campaign. "By putting the focus on individual responsibility, you encourage people to make good choices and reward them for doing so. I thought that was what we're about."
The former governor, who has struggled with his own weight in the past and has helped promote Michelle Obama's efforts, said rather than condemning her, "I think we ought to be thanking her."
Huckabee said the nation's obesity problem is worthy of more serious discussion and that it goes well beyond economics.
"If you really want to talk about obesity -- let's talk about it as a national security issue," Huckabee said. "We better hope we don't have a war with anybody because were not gonna have anybody who can pass the physical and wear the uniform."
Moochelle would do us all a favor if she looked in her own mirror, dealt with her own obesity, and left Americans alone.
???
Well, I sir, am thanking you for removing all doubt
Another one bites the dust
"better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt"
Spare me the fools, please.
As my friend from Virginia used to say, “Her rear end is as big as Buck Jones’ pony!”
I can make my own choice Huck, and that includes someone other than you.
ML/NJ
PS I'm a big Israel supporter who cried when I heard you on Nachum Segal's show a couple of weeks ago, you were so good. But there are other issues. FREEDOM here in America comes first.
Has anyone noticed this fast talking squirrel frying hippo was all down home when he wanted to be president.
Now he is just a fast talking squirrel frying hippo appeaser.
But too many folks think he is kewel.
She(Moochelle) probably has the same reaction to seeing herself in the mirror as I have to looking at her so she stopped.
Second; I'll never thank a pig for grunting!
Huck blew it. Not a chance for 2012. Sorry Huck, you are so toast as the youth would say it.
That’s why I hope he quietly goes to hell and stays away from our primaries. He and his ilk are a disgrace. After what this moron did to keep McLame on the ticket, I have had no use for him whatsoever.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the RIM promotes the hell out of him as they did with McLame.
And there are people who think this guy would be a good President?
LOL!
You devil dog, you! I almost shot a cashew out my nose over that one! OWW!
Shame on Huckabee and shame on anyone who thinks he should be President. There is simply no reason to express niceties to America's self-proclaimed, and wretched, 'Food Lord' or her equally, wretched and dangerous, husband.
These people hate America; and are destroying the soul and fabric of our Country; and they are doing this, determinedly and gladly. They are rep our enemies, for God's sake! Obama fiddles, America and the world burns. . .
right.
you can’t trust rinos like huckabee.
These types of comments by Huckabee just makes me wanna puke. Just a clueless sack of horse droppings.
Has Huckabee not noticed how Michelle and Obama 'move' their lips; mouth the words; and then do, precisely the opposite? NO, never noticed? Nothing in the 'fruits' of First Lady's food campaigns, speaks to 'choice'. The idea of 'personal responsibility' is as much an anathema to Michelle as it is to her husband.
NO WAY. . .'personal responsibility', Michelle's big behind. . .Pulleeeze!
David Huckabee
