Former state Sen. Joseph Jim Marzilli pleaded guilty today to accosting four women while on state business in Lowell in a bizarre sex-crazed spree that destroyed his career.
He was sentenced to three months in jail to be served at the Billerica House of Correction.
One of the Arlington Democrats victims was handicapped, police have said.
Lowell Superior Court Judge Paul Chernoff gave him prison time over the objections of his lawyer who was seeking probation.
In addition to four counts of accosting and annoying a person of the opposite sex, Marzilli also pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He also admitted to sufficient facts to find him guilty of indecent assault and battery.
None of Marzillis victims were in court this morning and he did not address the court.
The attacks all occurred on June 3, 2008, where according to court records he said to one victim: The sex is sweet. The sex is sweet and you want to go with me.
After his arrest, Marzilli was treated at a psychiatric hospital for bipolar disorder.
3 months for the perv in the Prius
Looks like he might get some new acquaintances to shake his willie at. No park benches, though.
Sittin’ on a park bench, eying little girls with bad intents...
Howie Carr’s heart will be “like an alligator” over the news about Sen. Aqualung.
Holy crap. That's a crime now?
Is it a crime to accost and annoy someone of the SAME sex?
This law accosts and annoys me. Who can I sue or jail?
True—he’s in Fla. this week of course, Michele McPhee in for him today—hope they get word to him and he can call in?
He’s a “Wand Waver!”

This story is okay but I liked the Gallucio one better because we could make up medicine chest booze lists. Like Oral B&B, Nupro-Goldshlagger and The Glen Listerine.
Ch 4 adds that after the 3 months are served in Billerica he is subject to 5 yrs of probation
Ch 7: He escapes felony charges. If he can’t make it thru the probation without another incident, he would get 5 yrs in jail. Both Ch 7 and Ch 5 had a short quote from former Sen.
George Bachrach, family spokesman (nicknamed Sen. George Boring by Jerry Williams) saying that Marzilli was a good person who “snapped”
Howie Carr used the word “squirrelly” to describe him (like the same word used in Merle Haggard’s “The Fightin’ Side of Me”)
Ahh. The "don't punish me I'm crazy" scam. It's preferable to the "I found Christ" scam these days.

From the police report. The arrest report listed his charged crimes as Assault and Battery Simple, Obstruction of Justice, Attempt to Commit a Felony, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Lewd and Lascivious Behavior
The fact that he’s even doing time is amazing (for (m)assachusetts)

>>LOWELL — Senator J. James Marzilli Jr. used the name of a fellow lawmaker when he was arrested Tuesday for allegedly trying to grope a woman on a park bench, telling police he was Martin Walsh, who is a state representative from Dorchester, a prosecutor said today in court.
>>Police threatened Marzilli with pepper spray after a foot chase through downtown Lowell because he would not put his hands above his head, according to a police report read in court by prosecutor Richard M. Mucci. Marzilli, 50, initially told officers his name was Martin Walsh, he lived in Medford, and was born in 1958. However, he soon revealed his true identity and told police, “you don’t understand ... I’m a state senator.’’
>>”The defendant began to cry,” Mucci said, reading from the police report. “He said they could not arrest him, that his life was over.”

LOWELL Former state Senator J. James Marzilli today was sentenced to spend three months behind bars after pleading guilty to charges he sexually harassed four women he randomly encountered in Lowell in 2008, actions his attorney said were partially fueled by a “chemical imbalance.’’
(snip)
Chernoff explained his sentencing decision in writing, noting that Marzillis attorney had argued his client has already suffered substantially — he lost his job in the Senate after his arrest, he is unemployable, now has a criminal record and is facing a civil lawsuit by one of the women he accosted.
But Chernoff wrote that he had more to consider.
The sentencing court is required to look beyond these mitigating factors and consider both the impacts of the crimes on the named victims and the undermining impact on the communitys confidence in government when a crime is committed by a public official who should be setting an example for the community, the judge wrote.

Marzilli, who did not speak during the hearing, was led away in handcuffs by court officers to begin his three month sentence. Chernoff also ordered him to spend five years on probation after his release; in the first year he is required to wear a GPS locating device.
Marzilli, a Democrat, represented Arlington in the Senate for many years until his bizarre actions in Lowell on June 3, 2008 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when he approached four women and made sexually suggestive comments to each of them.
Lowell police, who had been alerted by the string of verbal assaults, tried to stop Marzilli but he ran into a nearby parking garage where he resisted arrest, according to court papers filed by the office of Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr.

Based on summary of the case filed by Middlesex prosecutors, the Globe has reported that Marzilli allegedly approached the first woman near a community health center about 11 a.m.
He allegedly told her “how beautiful she was and that he loved her He eyed her up and down and said the sex is sweet, the sex is sweet, you want it, and you want to go with me. “
About a half hour later, the memorandum said, Marzilli approached the second woman, telling her, “ Oooh baby, you are so beautiful, your body is perfect, your butt is so perfect. “ according to prosecutors.
Around 1 p.m., the prosecution alleges, Marzilli approached the third woman near a bus stop. Marzilli asked her if she was wearing underwear, the memorandum said. The woman, who walked with a cane, was so shaken that when the bus arrived, she fell, prosecutors said.
Marzilli approached the fourth woman at about 3 p.m., prosecutors said. Marzilli sat down beside her on a bench “leaned into her and said, `Since I saw you, I’ve liked you. You are a very beautiful woman, the documents said. He then moved his hand and eyes toward her crotch, prosecutors alleged.
It would have been 10 years for somebody who is not “connected”.
By the way, does the perv go on the “sex offender” list?
