~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado

Schriever Air Force Base (Schriever AFB) is a base of the United States Air Force located approximately 10 miles east of Peterson AFB near Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The base is named in honor of General Bernard Adolph Schriever, who pioneered the development of the nation's ballistic missile programs.

It is home to Air Force Space Command's 50th Space Wing, which provides command and control for more than 170 Department of Defense warning, navigational, and communications satellites. Also housed at Schriever AFB are the Missile Defense Integration and Operations Center and the Space Innovation & Development Center. Schriever AFB is the main control point for the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Schriever AFB is the home of the 50th Space Wing, the Space Innovation and Development Center, the Missile Defense Agency's Joint National Integration Center, 310th Space Group and numerous tenant organizations.

The 50th Space Wing's mission provide combat effects to the warfighter, to include precision navigation and timing and secure satellite communication, through command and control of DOD satellite systems. The other units at Schriever also perform space missions. Schriever Air Force Base is unique in that they have no flightline and no aircraft mission.

Some of the services normally provided at most Air Force bases are not available on Schriever; however, Peterson AFB is a full service base, offering base housing and other support functions.

The 50th SW provides integrated combat effects from space, ensures command and control of satellite weapons systems, and conducts expeditionary operations to enable sovereign options for the defense of the United States of America and its global interests.

The wing operates and supports satellite programs including Global Positioning System, the Defense Satellite Communications System, Wideband Global SATCOM, Milstar, and the worldwide Air Force Satellite Control Network.

The SIDC is composed of the 595th Space Group and these three divisions; the Air Force Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities, or AF TENCAP; the Integration Division; and the Plans, Programs and Requirements Division.

The organizations work together to conduct wargaming; integrate space into exercises and experiments; rapidly prototype, field and exploit integrated air, space and cyberspace capabilities; provide advanced space testing, training and range Infrastructure; and execute AFSPC Force Development Evaluation and Operational Test programs.

It’s a lot easier and less messy to just pick one up at the store.

But, but, but...slaughtering hogs and hanging shanks in the smokehouse is just soooooooo much fun!!!!!

I hate wasting food, even if it is animal food.

Save the acorns until after you've moved - deer and turkey love 'em, and they taste real good when fed acorns...!!

Thanks!

(Apologies for not replying to your posts sooner. My daughter and I were texting for a while — once she was safely inside and at work, and then I had to go take my night meds.)

I’ve been thinking about that...could dump them in the woods...I don’t want to attract deer to my garden area..

Too much like hunting over a baited field.

Sure would make things a lot easier hunting though.

Some states allow hunters to have feed plots - Arizona is not one of them.

I tend not to agree with that tactic. There are plenty of places with natural concentrations of food to hunt in.

It’s windy now. After the freezing rain, local news said we got 4.8” of snow (in 90 minutes). Not sure when the snow happened; it was freezing rain when I took my nap. ;)

But w/wind tonight, she may have a touchy drive home in the morning, too. Depends on whether or not they can keep the roads plowed.

Not a problem.. higher priorities are well understood.

Does she work nights regularly or did she get called in for something emergent?

The deer over there are thick...When we were out scouting properties a herd of 7 came through the front yard.

No, Ohio. (I no longer live on the west coast of Ohio. About a year ago I moved a few miles east.) ;)

She works at a hospital north of here.

She’s a 3rd shift OR nurse, so she usually works from 11pm-7:30am. (She got to work a bit late tonight.)

I had that kind of thing happen when we lived up on Post - our quarters were in the last row of housing at the foot of the mountain. We had deer, javelina, skunks, ground squirrels, owls, rattlers, bears, and mountain lions all come through the area at one time or another during the three years we lived there.

Okay - time to call it a night - see everyone tomorrow, I hope.
