BISMARCK – The North Dakota House has voted to keep the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.
On a 65-28 vote, the House approved House Bill 1263, which states University of North Dakota athletic teams shall be known as the Fighting Sioux. Neither UND nor the state Board of Higher Education may take action to discontinue the use of the nickname or logo.
It requires the attorney general to consider filing a federal antitrust claim against the NCAA if the association takes any action to penalize UND for using the nickname and logo.
The bill will now move on to the Senate for further discussion.
It is about time! I was hoping something would be done to stop the madness.
Sad that the legislature has to get involved in what should have been a non-issue.
I went to a University of Illinois basketball game recently and it stinks that they no longer have the “Chief” do his bit at halftime. PCism run amuck...

I remember when the President of Eastern Michigan University decided to unilaterally change the name from the Hurons to the Eagles.
Even the Chief of the Huron Tribe complained; to no avail.
How about changing it to the "Fighting Sue" and changing the logo to a woman in curlers with a rolling pin?
The hypocrisy in this is amazing.
Good for ND! Also, applause for the Florida State Seminoles for not bowing to the PC crowd in the past.

Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Redskins, and the list goes on. The PC crowd as lots of work to do — and I hope they lose every round.

They used to be called the Cincinnati Red Stockings...so unless we’re going PC over prostitutes I don’t think this one applies.
Nice. Better to stay the Fighting Sioux than to become the Green Hawks or something.

The other big Sioux tribe at Ft. Yates, down on the South Dakota line, just recently voted out a PC Tribal Council which was trying to extract more than the usual goodies from UND as a condition for their support.
I suspect the new tribal council will get around to supporting their cousins up north at Ft. Totten before long.
Holy Cross has a great nickname. It just seems like every politically incorrect nickname gets changed to some type of colored bird.
Nicely done North Dakota! I believe “Don’t Tread on Me” would be the appropriate response to the NCAA.
