True, but I don’t think the U.S. would ever allow Egypt to abrogate the treaty in a manner which threatens our interests. In fact, I think the U.S. is perfectly comfortable with an “open access” arrangement under which even our avowed enemies are permitted to move military vessels through the Canal. See my previous discussion of the 1956 Suez Canal dispute as an example of such an odd arrangement.

I knew I remembered reading something about this. I suspect the Iranian ships are heading up to Syria and will accompany the next Gaza flotilla to a newly friendly Egyptian port from which they can resupply terrorists.

Yes, it does. It's an accommodating arrangement that works well for both sides. Unfortunately, our own financial irresponsibility helped drive the recent leadership turmoil in Egypt -- because the ongoing decline of the U.S. dollar had some serious consequences for a country like Egypt that relies on U.S. aid and U.S. trade for its well-being.

I'm guessing that the U.S. will end up cutting deals with the new government in Egypt very quickly -- to help ensure the free flow of cargo through that canal.

The plot begins to thicken. I was unaware of the Gaza Flotilla. I did see the Syria headline though, which is also a Shia stronghold and close neighbor to Iran.

I suspect some destabilizing attacks to surface in the very near future. Israel is very nervous over this.

LOL. One of the interesting characteristics of the Suez Canal is that it’s a “flat” canal — meaning it connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea though a waterway system that has no locks or dams.
