Despite the Detroit mayor's apparent disinterest in erecting a "RoboCop" statue, supporters of the idea have exceeded their fundraising goal of $50,000 -- hoping their plans to honor the legendary cyborg will become a reality.
The story of "RoboCop," a hero officer killed in a shootout and brought back to life as a half-mechanized crime fighter in Detroit, is a 1987 cult classic.
The push to construct a statue honoring the superhero began when Detroit Mayor Dave Bing took to the Internet to solicit ideas for the city's revival.
Someone then posted the idea on Twitter, but Bing didn't seem to keen on it.
"There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop," Bing wrote on his Twitter account. "Thank you for your suggestion."
The mayor, however, touched off an immediate wave of Twitter messages from fans of the movie who hope he will reconsider, and others amused that he had even responded.
Now, just six days later, organizers say they've exceeded their fundraising goal of $50,000 needed to build the statue, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.
In an interview with the station, John Leonard, an artist and one of the masterminds behind the online campaign, called RoboCop a "symbol of rebirth."
"He's a superhero," he said. "I think if you look at the characters ... sort of the morals and the positive things that the character embodies are really the driving factor behind this."

I don't know about the rest of you, but, if I ever find myself in Detroit (for whatever reason), checking out the RoboCop statue would definitely be on my To-Do List!
Hey, if it’s 100% privately funded, no taxpayer money used, why not?

I think Mayor Bing was hinting that he'd rather have a statue of himself in a Pistons uniform, with short shorts.
The movie was MADE IN DALLAS!!!!!! hhhelllooo??
Similarly, I'm not convinced that a statue of a movie superhero from the eighties is in the list of top ten priorities for making a safer, nobler Detroit. But it's their money and their town--and it was a pretty cool movie. And maybe it'll give people something new to spray-paint grafitti on.
Why not? Philly has a statue of a giant clothespin. RoboCop would be a lot cooler.
The movie was set in Detroit, regardless of where it was made.
Ping!
Well...Philadelphia has it’s “Rocky” statue. I guess it makes sense for every liberal cesspool to idolize some fictional character since reality is generally too hard to deal with in those places.
Actually that movie depicted Detroits future pretty well from a couple decades ago.
Oh good, that’ll fix everything.
I'll buy THAT for a dollar!
I liked the movie, quite sarcastic as well as fun.
Really stupid...This statue would only pay homage to a dumb-assed movie cyborg. Just a really dumb idea and how it would add one iota of cultural value to Detroit, I have no idea!
SciFi Ping.
We know a journalist wrote this --as opposed to some bro in his pajamas-- cuz "disinterested" means, OBJECTIVE. It does not mean UNinterested.
The other one journoz screw-up is ARTFUL, which means dishonest (nothing to do with paintings and stuff).
They also blow-it on TORTUOUS, which in fact means CURVY (has nothing to do with torture).
It would be stolen and sold as scrap within a week.
Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.

Well, “artful” can refer to one having skill at artwork. It also doesn’t have to mean dishonest—the key part is cleverness (though it does typically imply craftiness or cunning).
And yes, TORTUROUS is the word they want when referring to torture.
And it would be less ambiguous if they stuck to a meaning of unbiased when using disinterested...the other meaning confuses things.
As much as I try to just accept the improper use of words (e.g., “tidal wave” when they mean “tsunami”), it bugs me, and I’m glad I’m not the only one!
Yes, and remember that it was radicals Leftists (the Weathermen) who bombed Le Penseur (The Thinker) in Cleveland. Can't have thought, you know.
