"My son is being deployed to trashcanistan in May. What perfect timing this is."

Mine, too. Word from returning troops is not good. They say they are basically walking the roads waiting to set off an IED and handing out cash. Most of them never laid eyes on an enemy, but guys are getting blown up every day. We wouldn't know since there is NO news coverage on that war. Thank God for Michael Yon. Praying for our boys.

>>Funny...he was in the war in 2003, but the COIN FM wasn't drafted until 2006. Did he have a time machine?!?

>Not the information I have read. Not sure what source you are citing.

The COIN FM (PDF) itself.

If you were referring to his deployment dates, I'm sure a Google search will confirm that he was in the initial actions of the Iraq War, and that the Iraq War started before 2006.

If you were referring to a time machine, I agree--he didn't have one.

The Petraeus Doctrine in action! Have you heard how it's working out?

I’ll do my own research, as I don’t have much faith in yours. If you claim he was “there”, fine. Perhaps he was. If you say he was the operational commander, then we have another issue. Being in theatre doesn’t make one the person running the show.

My understanding is that he is a Republican. I wouldn’t be so committed to support him as a Democrat. But, of course, what sane military man would be a Democrat. Makes me think of Wesley Clark—a complete dud.

I think we need a military man, in the Eisenhower strain, to cut through the foolishness on the right and the left. He needs to chart a long-term strategy, the way Eisenhower did in the early days of the Cold War, to strenghten the US economically and militarily.

Praying for your boys, and all the good and faithful men over there, fighting against the odds.

5900 killed already in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands maimed, thousands of amputations, thousands brain-damaged.

I say it’s not worth it. And I also think our president enjoys seeing white Christian boys being blown up by his fellow Muslims.

Good. I will get back to paying clients! ;-)

To get you started, here are some hints...

If you claim he was “there”, fine. Perhaps he was.

Gen Petraeus was a 2-star general at the start of the war. He commanded the 101st Airborne Division during the initial drive right up through the time it was in Mosul. Rick Atkinson described this (albeit poorly) in In the Company of Soldiers, which was published in 2005...which is before 2006.

If you say he was the operational commander, then we have another issue. Being in theatre doesn’t make one the person running the show.

Was he ever running anything before he was running anything? Well, Newsweek seemed to think so, as it slobbered all over him...

I suggest that, in addition to the published sources, you talk with the troops that were there in Ninewah both while he was there and those who had to clean up the mess he left. I've done so.

My original comment indicated that he'd learned from his early mistakes, but from what I am reading now about his performance in Afghanistan, perhaps not entirely. He's evidently still out there funding the enemy by passing out taxpayer $$$ left and right.

“...I think we need a military man, in the Eisenhower strain, to cut through the foolishness on the right and the left...”

Personally, at this point in time, I’d like one in the George Patton or Douglas MacArthur strain!!!!!

Good assessment, though!!

Obama has idea the old slang,”Never change your horses in the middle of the stream?” Wasn’t there some corporal in Germany a ways back that seemed to always know better than the generals he ordered around?

“......MacArthur should have run against Truman and sent him packin’...”

...which points to a problem we STILL have to this day..our side just seems to back off and let the other side run amok, always.

Then, when we get in office and get stuck cleaning up the mess that the socialists leave behind, we also get the blame. And nary a word is raised in defense by our side...

Tiresome game...with life or death stakes.
