Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio led a field of potential Republican Senate candidates in Arizona with 21 percent in a poll of likely GOP primary voters last week.

Rep. Jeff Flake, who announced his candidacy for the seat of retiring Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) on Monday, finished second with 16.8 percent in the Summit Consulting Group survey. Former Rep. J.D. Hayworth took third, with 16.6 percent. He was unsuccessful in his primary challenge to Sen. John McCain last year.

If I lived in AZ and Arpaio really was running, I’d vote for him just because of his pro-America stand against that disease called illegal aliens.

I just hope she (Giffords) recovers to lead a somewhat normal life, which would be a miracle unto itself. Leave it to the death cult called the democrat party to say "It's just a flesh wound! You don't need a brain to be a good democrat! GET BACK TO WORK - WE NEED YOU TO WIN!!!!!!"

What a great lot of ghouls they are.

“Number three is plausible. Sentiments can be a fine thing, but that should not decide who is a Senator.”

Remember Mel Carnahan in Missouri?

I think I replied to a post about Gifford’s stance on everything green. Don’t remember too well.

And Arpaio is in his 70’s, correct? I’m no ageist but I think that’s a little too old to be starting off in the Senate.

Ronald Reagan — was 70-years old when he was first elected president.

Sheriff Joe should run for President. He would be the only one who represents the people and not any interest groups.

He is the real deal and he has a birth certificate!

Yeah she allegedly was a Republican. But that doesn’t mean a thing. Jim Jeffords used to be a Republican too.

She’s not on the furthest liberal rung but Giffords is no DINO and no friend to border security.

All talk of her being a moderate is just the typical spin.

"I don’t understand your posy. Are you saying you WANT Giffords to return to office?"

This is what I said:

"I agree with you about her. My hope is that she recovers enough to live some sort of normal life. The bigger concern politically is not her running, but perhaps her husband."

So to summ up, what I said is I want to see her get better. Would I like to see her get well enough so that she could run for office again? Absolutely. Would I like her to be defeated while running for office? Absolutely. Would that happen? Probably not. But it's a small price to pay for someone to get better, wouldn't you say?

Are we conservatives so callous that we want to see our enemies all become physically or mentally incapacited so they can't run for office. Or do we want them all killed? If we are, we become like our enemies who want to see our leaders killed. I want to defeat our enemies on the battlefield of ideas. Not see them killed or maimed.

"Ronald Reagan — was 70-years old when he was first elected president."

Reagan's birthday: February 6, 1911

Elected President: November 4, 1980

Reagan was 69 when he was elected president.

Upon further examination of Sherrif Joe Arpaio, he is 78 and he would be 80 if elected in 2012. Is not 69 and 80 a pretty big difference? All I'm saying is that I would like to see someone who would be more than a one termer in there and I think Sherrif Joe would be a one termer.

There's a lot of truth in that statement...

Thanks for making your position clear. It wasn’t clear, and there are other possibilities between wishing someone dead and wanting them in office.

I can't imagine any scenario where Giffords recovers enough to mount an active statewide Senate race. She's recovering from being shot in the head at point blank range -- it's a miracle she's still with us, let alone still in politics. I hope she makes a full recovery, but usually in cases like this, the victim ends up like Jim Brady and can no longer fulfill the day-to-day duties of their office.

Of course the RATs have no shame, they might push her to announce even if she can't campaign or do the job, knowing no Republican would dare run anti-Giffords ad and she could win just on the sympathy factor alone.

Ultimately I don't believe she'll run for the Senate though. She might "run" (file for re-election, but not campaign) for another term in the House, which she'd handily win due to the above factors (regardless of her condition -- see Sen. Johnson).

As for the GOP side, surely we can do better than Flake or Sheriff Joe. I love Sheriff Joe, but I don't love the idea of starting a Senate career at age 80 (at least it makes more sense than the calls for him to run an anti-illegal immigration themed campaign for Governor against Brewer, when Brewer held the same views). And the funny thing is Flake is a solid conservative on everything else (the Club for Growth LOVES him, reinforcing my point that they're narrowly focused on a select group of issues), but his record on immigration is unacceptable. He's not just wobbly on the issue, he sucks on border security.

Can we please have someone else step up to the plate?
