A teen who joined the U.S. Marines claims he was fired from his job as a sacker at the Food King store in Texas City because he missed work as he was sworn in as a recruit.
Joshua Perthius, 18, claimed the stores manager already had threatened to fire him if he missed work because of his recruit activities.
But Food Kings management claimed the teens firing had nothing to do with his plans to join the military. They said Perthius was fired because he never informed the store manager he needed the time off and that he didnt follow store policy for requesting time off.
Perthius, a senior at Texas City High School, went to work for Food King about four months ago as part of a work cooperative plan at the school. As he looked at what he would do when he graduated, Perthius met with a U.S. Marine recruiter.

More to this, methinks...

He should have hitched a ride with Flounder to the Food King.
Food King! Food King! Food King!
I say PROSECUTE HIM ~ every now and then we need an example for the others!
My goodness, I enlisted and the guys at work gave me a big party and a bunch of WWII and Korean War vets took me over to the National Press Club for more partying.
When I came back those same vets saw to it my hold baggage got shipped to my desk ~ lest it be lost somewhere in a post office somewhere.
I agree. The boy may have missed work more than once.
he was fired right before swearing in so they didnt have to work around him on drill weekends.
If he didn’t follow store procedures for asking for the time off, then yeah, he put himself on the chopping block. But if he did dot his Is and cross his Ts, follow all the store’s rules, and they fired him anyway? That manager should catch hell for it.

Doesn’t seem like he will be good for the military anyway. If he does this in the military, he will find worse results than getting fired.

Failed in two areas. First he just didn’t show up for work and second he didn’t go to work as part of the high school work plan. I think he probably should stay a food sacker. The military is now receiving so many brilliant kids that a kid like this is not needed.
Or, perhaps the USMC will straighten him out - make him ship shape, as we used to the say in the USN, anyways.
That is very true..
Sounds like the military is just what this kid needs. They will take this irresponsible kid and turn him into a respectable, responsible adult in short order. Or else he will be spending a lot of time in the brig.
“Officers, they’re looting the Food King”
bfl.
I am going to go with the kid on this on. After getting a call from the recruiter I think the manger had it in for the kid.
USMC will straighten him out
I agree the USMC will teach him how to follow orders. It is good for the kid to learn discipline now instead of 30 years down the road.
That’s the kind of mentor I want for my teenager: “WTF, you’re choosing service as a United States Marine over bagging groceries in my fiefdom? Well, we’ll see who has the last laugh NOW!”
Wadda maroon...

Yes, any service.
Reading through the thread, I see that once again several have jerked knees and made unwarranted assumptions before reading the entire story.
