Ohio Congress members seek Lake Erie high speed rail corridor

Ohio may yet get on track with President Obama's newly announced $53 billion initiative to build a nationwide high speed rail network.

A bipartisan group of northern Ohio Congress members met Thursday with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to discuss building a high speed rail line along Lake Erie that would link Cleveland with Chicago, Detroit, Toledo and Buffalo, and also include routes to Youngstown and Pittsburgh. Building a line along the lake is a top tier part of Obama's rail program.

Bainbridge Township GOP Rep. Steve LaTourette said he plans to work with Republicans and Democrats from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan "to see if there's a way we can help restore some of what the President's vision is on high speed rail in our part of the world."

"If we can go to him with a proposal that doesn't cripple Ohio's general fund and puts people to work and moves us into the 21st century when it comes to passenger rail, I'm sure he'll listen to us," LaTourette said of Kasich.

Once again LaTourette proves that he is a big spending RINO. The other congress critters are Dims.

Gov. Kasich rejected already $400 million in federal funds to build a different train line but does not reject other rail projects out of hand.

We have a lot work ahead of us to turn this government away from free spending insanity.

This is being seen as a much more palatable strategy than getting government off the back of small business so they can create jobs in the area. People can just be wisked through the area so fast on a high speed train that no one really pays attention to it any more. Of course, they don’t think anyone will actually ride the train, in which case they hope to turn it into a government owned theme park called “The Ghost Train”.

Cities that have taxed, unionized, outforced business, lost HALF their population, doubled their welfare, illegals....want the rest of us to pay for a choo-choo so that gov paper-shufflers and a few urban metosexual hipsters can pretend they are in Deutschland.

What they don’t mention is that true high speed rail would require entirely new rail lines.

Existing rail lines besides having feight traffic can only support speeds of about 70 miles per hour. In most cities the speed is limited by law to 35 mph by law.

$53 billion dollars would only be seed money for the proposed project.

Considering the land that would have to be purchased and the road bed construction cost (union of course) ten times that amount or more is likely.

Thanks,,,, but I’ll stick to my car. I can stop when I want to, grab a burger if I want, blast Blues on my stereo if I want to,,,, and get there just as fast, and have my own car to get around in. A total boondogle. A waste that very few people will use. And that we’ll have to subsidize forever! No,,, thank you!

I don’t understand the fixation with high speed rails for America. We a decentralized country with suburbs often as far as 60 miles from urban centers. We are well served by cars for our local travel and planes for our long-distance travel. What would we gain with high speed rails if we have to take a car or a plane to the rail station?

Waste.

Exactly

If you read the article you will find Ryan is working to get a study done on prospective routes.

High speed rail has had so many studies done on high speed rail since the 70’s there should be more than enough paper printed about it to solve the energy crisis if they were to burn the studies to produce power and considering that there is a new study every couple of years it should qualify for renewable resources grants.

They had such a train back in the ‘50s. Such lost its clientele to the airlines, just as Ocean liners did. The ones is Germany, which I have ridden, do not make money. I love passenger trains, but they are not economical.

The history of passenger rail since the 1950’s is unalloyed failure. Passenger rail in the United States after the advent of the personal car and the interstate highway system has proved to be unprofitable. The coming of inexpensive airline travel was the stake through the heart.
