This was that park in the extinct volcano that they sent all of us to on the bus for some R&R...:)
In the back on the left in the blue shirt, that was Greaseman (Griese), a good guy. Quiet. Our direct supervisor. The ace mechanic. Hidden behind the hat is Bear (Baldridge). He once pinned me against a locker by my throat because I woke him up by grabbing his toe and wiggling it. He didn't show up one morning, and Cookieman told me to go down to the compartment and get him out of the rack. I went down, gently grabbed his foot and gave it a little shake and said "Bear, you're late...you gotta get to work..." He leaped out of his rack, pinned my by my neck to the lockers, completely enraged and yelled "DON'T YOU TOUCH MY GD FEET!" Then he went back into his rack and rolled over. I went back, and told Cookieman "I don't think he's coming, Cookie, he just attacked me." Cook stood up and said "Follow me." As we approached the compartment, there was a bucket of greasy, dirty water with a swab in it, Cook just grabbed that swab, walked over to Bear's rack, used the dirty, stinking swab to sweep aside his curtain and began poking him in the face with it, saying "Come on, Bear. Get outta that rack...come on...get up..." Well, Bear just jumped up with clenched fists, when he saw it was Cook, he just stood there blinking, with that nasty water running down his face!
The guy with the blue hat is Chief Moore. Just a fabulous guy. From Mississippi, as I recall. Mild mannered, quiet and extraordinarily competent. He was in charge of all of us jet mechanics (These were all guys from my shop here) He had piercing blue eyes, and always a huge chaw in his mouth and a styrofoam coffee cup in his hand, full of tobacco spit. One time, I remember some other Chief screaming at him about something we did, the guy was in full throat, waving his hands, face red...and Chief Moore just sat there placidly looking at him, bulge in his cheek, not saying anything. At the peak of the guy's rant, just as he was about to make his point, Chief Moore just inclined his head slightly and let loose a huge stream of brown spit into that cup. It was as if he took a cleaver to the guy's sentence...he just stopped in mid-syllable! I think Chief Moore did that deliberately...:)
The guy with the hamburger is Ski (Naperski)...another great guy. That's me on the right, looking at the burger...:)

My first deployment in 1981 (on board Nimitz), we spent Christmas in Naples. I had duty on Christmas day, but got off the ship on Christmas Eve. Found out later that it was the last boat ashore as the weather was turning bad. Came back that night, no boats.
We got a hotel room, away from fleet landing near a little bar we called the Lowenbrau house. Next morning, back to fleet landing, no boats. But free breakfast on the USS
Coontz tied at the pier. Told to check back around noon.
Back out into town, wandering around. At noon, still no boats, but informed about free Christmas dinner at AFSOUTH (the NATO base). So we head to AFSOUTH. Stuffed ourselves and headed back to fleet landing. Still no boats, told to come back in the morning.
More bars, then a hotel room. Next morning weather had calmed down and got back to the ship.
Wow!!! Got out of a duty day!!
Fast forward to 1995 and my LAST deployment to the Med on Eisenhower. Had signed up for the tour to Pompeii and had the duty the day before the tour. Guess what? the weather turned bad and boating was secured. My relief (I was Combat Systems duty section leader) was stuck ashore and I had to stand duty a second day in a row.
It took 14 years, but the Navy got their duty day back from me.
Don’t know if they’ve been mention yet, but here’s a few of my faves:
