68% Believe Government and Big Business Work Together Against the Rest of Us
Rasmussen Reports ^ | February 07, 2011

Obama told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce today that government and business “can and must work together."

But 68% of Likely U.S. Voters believe that government and big business already work together against the interests of consumers and investors. The latest Rasmussen Reports poll shows that only 13% disagree with this assessment

I recall a story a few years ago when Microsoft lost some regulatory issue with the Feds, concluding that it was time to change their policy of avoiding the protection racket scheme currently in place. Quite a wake-up call to them, apparently, and their wake-up call is one to all of us.

I remember the same thing. Of course, my memory may be faulty, but I think Microsoft went into battle thinking "we've done nothing wrong, we benefit the country, we employ lots of people, we have solid lawyers" and they were confident that nothing bad would happen. None of that mattered. The politicians were fully prepared to screw Microsoft to the wall.

So Bill Gates went out and hired lobbyists and started making contributions, and things got much better for this company. It's how the game is played.

I understand what you are saying but I worked for Ampex, IRC, Tektronix, Intel and others that don’t get that involved. I guess mainly because they didn’t have to. But.....that was some time ago.

“Add my name to that 68%. Big business and government enjoy an unhealthy symbiotic relationship. Today, big business bleeds America by sending jobs overseas to foreign nationals, (some even who are our potential enemies) abandoning American citizens.”

And mine as well in addition those unfair trade agreements threaten our sovereignty.

The British (actually Welsh) guy who introduced communism to America in 1826, Robert Owen, at New Harmony, Indiana, was a wealthy industrialist.

Very much agree with your post.

you’ve especially hit a chord with...

“We are surrounded by bad ideas and their toxic consequences. A free marketplace will tend to eliminate bad ideas — or at least it has a chance to — whereas in academia or government, since they are free from market discipline, bad ideas can become entrenched and almost impossible to eliminate, as in the educational establishment, or the state department, or our tax system, or social security.”

I would only add that corporate ‘group think’ also plays a major part w/ acadamia and government. All 3 entities play into the maxim ‘the root of all evil is the love of money’ - they use it to prop each other up and gain more power to force their wishes upon society no matter how twisted and perverted.

With very few exceptions, corporate america [I hesitate to say america here b/c it has been exported globally] accepts the secular humanist ammoral standards. They hint at loving whatever values are intrinsic to a culture while using deception to increase both power and wealth.

Palin has been pounding corporate cronyism for the past few months (GE, Unions, Obama).

Intel has had trouble with the FTC and NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Accusations of monopoly and special deals with Dell.

By itself, that means nothing at all. But I wouldn't be surprised if contributions and payments to lobbyists started looking like a good idea. I don't know, I don't have any information on it. But I see a big company getting picked on by the government and I have to wonder how problems like that "go away". Perhaps through a legitimate and above-board process. And perhaps not.

Most of the people that sit on the boards of these Mega Corporations are Globalists, hard core Lefties, big government Neo-cons, and outright foreigners that don’t care a wit about America or its Founding Principles. In fact a lot of them hate traditional America like this G.E. jackass Immelt that’s now working for Obama. These aren’t American businessmen and innovators in the tradition of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, J.J. Hill, or Micheal Dell. These Corporations aren’t interested in building up this country or even making money really. They are front organizations for the Globalists used to control entire swaths of the economy, lock out real Americans, prevent Middle-class wealth creation, and push their agenda of environmentalism, diversity, and one worlderism.

Conservatives routinely defend “business” against attacks because those attacking are enemies of the free market and freedom in general. We seem to think this means that “business” is therefore a supporter of the free market.

Nothing could be less true.

(Effective) businessmen are by definition experts in maximizing profits. If they can develop a cozy relationship with politicians and regulators and gain advantages in the market, this is almost always easier to do than gaining an equivalent advantage by producing a better product, marketing it more effectively, etc. So of course business gravitates to the highest ROI, that’s its job.

Adam Smith, the founder of market economics, had no illusions about the nature of businessmen. He knew perfectly well they would conspire with each other and the government against the public whenever they got the chance.

The free market works in the same way as the scientific method. Not because individual businessmen or scientists are honest and above-board, but because the market and the method impose ethics despite the conscious or unconscious dishonesty of the participants.

Something about an “invisible hand,” if I recall correctly.

Another phenomena that I have found is that most petroleum companies donate heavily to enviro-wacko movements/programs. I guess they think they’re appeasing them or, might they be playing both sides? Probably.

It simply keeps oil prices high.

We are already deep into Global Corporatism. Most of the left/right arguments about the matter are quaint and silly...and would have mattered 40 years ago. Most people are so far behind the curve, it is the equivalent of worrying about termites while the house is burning to the ground. Arguing about a 30 billion dollar cut here or there is really laughable. It is the equivalent of Mark Cuban clipping a 10 cent coupon.

“The British (actually Welsh) guy who introduced communism to America in 1826, Robert Owen, at New Harmony, Indiana, was a wealthy industrialist.”

The Fabian Socialists (Communists lite) infiltrated all segments of society perfect examples are the socialist bankers like life long democrat big spender on obama Lloyd Blankfein and Jamie Demon. They play both sides of the fence to accomplish their goals for example the big global banks donated not only to obama but Acorn as well. They were players in the climate fraud also via carbon credits. Mises warned of them Socialism’s last stand.

Now that election 2010 is over, let’s go back over to OpenSecrets and look at which evil corporations stole our democracy and bought Congress for the Republicans — the RepubliCorp!

The President's call for businesses to spend money and hire people, without a pledge on his part that government would lighten its tax and regulatory burden, demonstrates his ignorance of good business principles and practice.

Until there is certainty about tax and monetary policy and about how the Administration may implement new regulatory rules, businesses would be foolish to begin spending their capital and hiring workers, and a wise Executive would not recommend it. Businesses cannot operate by Presidential edict. They can operate successfully when the President and Congress create an environment which allows them to be profitable and create real wealth for the nation and the citizens.

The following paragraphs are from "Our Ageless Constitution":

"The enviable condition of the people of the United States is often too much ascribed to the physical advantages of their soil & climate .... But a just estimate of the happiness of our country will never overlook what belongs to the fertile activity of a free people and the benign influence of a responsible government." - James Madison

"America's Constitution did not mention freedom of enterprise per se, but it did set up a system of laws to secure individual liberty and freedom of choice in keeping with Creator-endowed natural rights. Out of these, free enterprise flourished naturally. Even though the words "free enterprise' are not in the Constitution, the concept was uppermost in the minds of the Founders, typified by the remarks of Madison as quoted above."

What America's Founders understood was that it is not government which creates jobs or wealth. Thus, the President's constant claims that his administration has "saved or created" jobs are empty and reveal the wide gap between the ideas and principles which made America a bastion of liberty, opportunity and plenty, and those of the redistributionists who only know how to use up what has been created by the freedom of individual enterprise of citizens in a free society.
