World record attempts for the heaviest person to complete a marathon and largest cheerleading dance will be made at the March 20 Los Angeles Marathon, race organizers announced today.
Kelly Gneiting, of Ft. Defiance, Ariz., a 410-pound statistician at the Ft. Defiance Indian Hospital, will try to enter the Guinness World Records as the heaviest marathon finisher.
Gneiting completed the 2008 marathon in 11 hours, 52 minutes, 11 seconds, but was not credited with the record because he did not follow the Guinness requirements.
Guinness requirements state that Gneiting must be weighed immediately before and immediately after the race and the entire race must be filmed. The record is 275 pounds.
The three-time United States sumo champion said he trains every day, with a six-mile jog on Saturdays, in addition walking a mile-and-a-half each way to his job.
The 40-year-old Gneiting said he expects to complete the race in between nine and 11 hours, jogging about half the 26-mile, 385-yard course and walking the rest.

Do they use a stopwatch or a calendar?
Let’s hope the course is nowhere near the San Andreas fault.
Good luck, buddy. I wish you and your poor, disintigrating knees, hips, and feet all the best.
40 years old and 417 pounds will lead to knee and hip surgery before age 50.
Why should we pay for his desire to be famous?
"Doh! Hind tit once again"
“Why should we pay for his desire to be famous?”
Oh for heaven’s sake.
LOL!
I betcha five bucks his fat ass sleeps in on race day.
I guess that's pretty good for a 400 pound man, but it's still walking.
If this man can jog six miles every Saturday and still walk three miles every day, he must be in some sort of decent shape. Of course, I am thinking if you are exercising that much, why do you still weight 400 pounds? Interesting.
I have a lot of respect for what Gneiting has accomplished. Still, he is 40 and really fat. I suggest he drop about 100 pounds very soon. He’ll really appreciate that when he actually can still move 20 years on.
good grief...how much does this guy eat???
Or, perhaps a sundial?
The equivalent of one or two pencil-necked geeks a day, if I had to guess.
Calories-In > Calories-Out
I know from some marathon and triathlon experience, if you haven't trained properly, things get exponentially more difficult as the race goes on. He may be able to jog six miles, but by the time he gets to mile 20 I bet he won't be able to walk.
Twenty miles is a feat for anyone IMO. It isn’t something you just decide to do. I am sure it is something that involves proper training, nutrition etc... I don’t think he will be able to walk as well. Plus, that weight will surely strain his heart and breathing not to mention his joints (knees, hip, ankles, feet). I have a feeling if he ate correctly with his current exercise routine, he would lose weight. He seemed to want to be the heaviest guy so he is gorging to keep the weight up.
