[Editor's note: the following is a speech by Geert Wilders' delivered at the resumption of his trial on February 7th, 2011. Wilders is charged with inciting hatred and discrimination by speaking the truth about Islam.]
The lights are going out all over Europe. All over the continent where our culture flourished and where man created freedom, prosperity and civilization. Everywhere the foundation of the West is under attack.
All over Europe the elites are acting as the protectors of an ideology that has been bent on destroying us since the fourteenth century. An ideology that has sprung from the desert and that can produce only deserts because it does not give people freedom. The Islamic Mozart, the Islamic Gerard Reve [a Dutch author], the Islamic Bill Gates; they do not exist because without freedom there is no creativity. The ideology of Islam is especially noted for killing and oppression and can only produce societies that are backward and impoverished. Surprisingly, the elites do not want to hear any criticism of this ideology.
My trial is not an isolated incident. Only fools believe it is. All over Europe multicultural elites are waging total war against their populations. Their goal is to continue the strategy of mass-immigration, which will ultimately result in an islamic Europe – a Europe without freedom: Eurabia.
The lights are going out all over Europe. Anyone who thinks or speaks individually is at risk. Freedom loving citizens who criticize islam, or even merely suggest that there is a relationship between islam and crime or honour killing, must suffer and are threatened or criminalized. Those who speak the truth are in danger.
The lights are going out allover Europe. Everywhere the Orwellian thought police are at work, on the lookout for thought crimes everywhere, casting the populace back within the confines where it is allowed to think.
This trial is not about me. It is about something much greater. Freedom of speech is not the property of those who happen to belong to the elites of a country. It is an inalienable right, the birthright of our people. For centuries battles have been fought for it, and now it is being sacrificed to please a totalitarian ideology.
Future generations will look back at this trial and wonder who was right. Who defended freedom and who wanted to get rid of it.
The lights are going out all over Europe. Our freedom is being restricted everywhere, so I repeat what I said here last year:
It is not only the privilege, but also the duty of free people – and hence also my duty as a member of the Dutch Parliament – to speak out against any ideology that threatens freedom. Hence it is a right and a duty to speak the truth about the evil ideology that is called islam. I hope that freedom of speech will emerge triumphant from this trial. I hope not only that I shall be acquitted, but especially that freedom of speech will continue to exist in the Netherlands and in Europe.

Very well said.
My hat goes off to Mr. Wilders. Millions of lives were lost in WWII because a demented man wanted to rule Europe. Now a force is trying to do, without firing a shot, what Hitler tried back then. Hopefully many more Europeans will join Geert Wilders in defeating this new scourge.
We had better learn from the EU. Islam is trying their best to get a foothold here and it must be stopped before it reaches the point it has in Europe.

Interesting point. However, the women themselves are much of the problem. There is an old saying, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”. What kind of women raise their own sons in that evil religion to become misogynist brutes? Above all, those women’s minds must be freed.
My question was rhetorical. I should have made that clear. Thank you for the link I had not seen him before. We need more like these two.

This may be the key for Europe. Emphasize women's rights. Women's rights are incompatable with Islam, but it is something that liberal Europe can support.

I agree by adding one word. I will say why later. Maybe a chance is worth taking to avoid war.

Anyway all aside the problem with the socialist is that they are grabby lil punks who won’t be happy till everything goes their way and till they get revenge on everyone who disagrees with them.
As for what happens to Europe,I think one major reason why France has been able to push its Muslim “issue” back while America has only recently managed to ignore its Mexicans/Hispanics was the accession of the East into Europe.
Even with the issues caused by some Eastern Europeans,not to mention the Roma,that is given the EU a much higher ratio of native Europeans versus Muslims.Especially as Turkey doesn’t look like it is going to join anytime soon.

Yes. But I think that's actually one of the things that has made fundamentalist Islam so much more aggressive -- they're losing control over their women, and responding in their usual way.
But western culture has been making inroads into Islamic culture -- more subtly, more quietly, but probably for that reason more effectively. The younger generation of Islamic European women is out in the world, and they can see for themselves what is available to them. We hear about "honor killings," and you'll note that at root they're usually about some girl asserting her freedom. But for every "honor killing" in Europe, there are probably a few dozen fathers who have given ground or outright surrendered. Progress isn't obvious, but I'll guarantee you it's being made.
The real problem of western culture, is that it has lost confidence in itself, for any number of reasons. There's decadence, and there's the oppressive history of the entire 20th Century that removed the cream of two entire generations from society.
But under threat.... I think western culture will find its footing again; and I think we're beginning to see that.

I'm not making excuses for them. And I think it's fine to question the qualifications of those in charge right now. If we look at what motivates them, I think there's a tremendous arrogance behind their multicultural pretensions, and I think they may even derive a degree of enjoyment from the sense that western culture should be taken down a peg or two; and Islam works as a stalking horse for that impulse. They don't belong in power.
At the same time, I think Wilders was stupid to claim that the ruling elite are "waging total war." It's a lazy claim -- intended more to incite than to inform -- and it's probably not true.
It's also stupid to dismiss the memory of the Nazi Holocaust as part of their motivation; and it is downright dangerous to forget the Holocaust as an example of what can happen when a religion becomes the focus of a government crackdown. There is good reason to be cautious about how European governments deal with the undeniable problems Islamic fundamentalism is causing in their societies.
I would support that.
Well, you and I disagree but we do agree on one thing; the ruling elites shouldn’t be ruling. At least I think I read you saying that.

It doesn’t make sense. Wilders is kind of like the Glenn Beck of Europe only braver.
I’ve been to the Netherlands often. I have watched his Partij Voor de Frijheid grow in power.
