In front of hundreds of volunteers and activists at the Centennial birthday celebration for President Ronald Reagan, Senator Mark Kirk and Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady announced a November 5, 2011 "Pre-Presidential Primary" straw poll for Republican voters in Illinois. The poll will occur one year and a day before the 2012 Presidential Election.

The ballot will be formalized by the party's state central committee and announced at Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair in August.

“We hope to bring the time and attention of the presidential candidates to Illinois," said Senator Kirk. "New Hampshire and Iowa should not have all the fun."

Open Question(s): Which way will Illinois Republicans go in this straw poll, and how would an early hint of Illinois' GOP pick affect the primaries, if at all?

I heard Sen. Kirk say that, to vote, in this straw poll, votes will pay $25. The vote will indicate the popularity of the candidates among people who can afford to vote. The most popular candidate, in our state, will be a different candidate.

The point made by your rhetorical question is exactly correct.

Repeal the 17th Amendment.

For years, our party “leaders” in Illinois have loudly proclaimed that far-left “Republicans” who support partial birth abortion and cap n’ trade are the ONLY kinds of Republicans who can “win” in Illinois. Then they wonder why any Republican to the right of Stalin doesn’t bother to accept their invitations to come here.

And knowing Kirk’s beliefs, Nelson Rockefeller would probably be “too conservative” to make his acceptable GOP nominee list.

Sorry, wolfpat -- the crooked, gerrymandered, Chicago-machine controlled Illinois state legislature is a textbook example of why we should KEEP the 17th amendment.

And if anyone is going to claim our RAT dominated legislature is only that way because that's what the electorate wanted (and we don't "study the candidates hard enough"), here's a fine example of the obscene district lines the Dems came up with to ensure they win EVERY time in Crook county, even when there's huge GOP turnout. Here's the state legislature district directly south of mine, with the numbers they reported from last November:

Illinois State Representative, 35th District - Nov 2010

SUBURBAN COOK COUNTY ONLY (the vast majority of the district)
61 of 61 Precincts Reported
Dr. Barbara Bellar (conservative GOP) 53.23% 10,481 votes
Bill Cunningham (Chicago machine RAT) 46.77% 9,208 votes

CITY OF CHICAGO ONLY (small portion of the district)
1 Ward (19th) Reported
Dr. Barbara Bellar (conservative GOP) 28.54% 4,969 votes
Bill Cunningham (Chicago machine RAT) 71.46% 12,441 votes

RESULTS DISTRICT WIDE
Dr. Barbara Bellar (conservative GOP) 41.65% 15,450 votes
Bill Cunningham (Chicago machine RAT) 58.35% 21,649 votes

The Republican candidate gets 53% of the vote in the 2/3rds of the district that is OUTSIDE Chicago city limits and still loses by nearly 60% district wide because within Chicago they give any RAT 80%+ of their vote. You could run Charlie Manson there on the RAT ticket and he'd rack up at least 75% of the Chicago vote. Can you say tyranny of the minority?

The Chicago machine has eliminated any chance of us getting non-Chicago machine hacks to represent us on the state level. Some freepers would like to ensure they'll do that on the federal level as well.

Gotta love that Democrat gerrymandering. Took us almost 140 years in Tennessee to bust it.

I agree that the 17th Amendment shouldnt be repealed. During 28 of the last 30 years, Democrats controlled both houses of the Illinois legislature. Twice, during that time, IL elected republican U.S. senators. If the 17th Amendment didn’t exist, neither of those Republicans would have been elected.

About six weeks ago, I emailed a state senator and a state rep., in each party, in the elections committees, and I asked them to use Iowa’s method, when they draw the new maps for congressional, state senate, and state house districts. I said that the Iowa method uses a computer program that doesn’t consider ethnic groups, incumbents, or parties. I got a response from an aide to State Rep. Dan Brady. She said, “Illinois doesn’t use that method. All of those maps will be drawn by Gov. Quinn, Senator Cullerton, and Rep. Madigan.”

When a sewer rat sees it’s shadow that means 10 more years of gerrymandered political winter.
