SANTA FE – Governor Susana Martinez announced today that she has signed an executive order rescinding sanctuary status for illegal immigrants who commit crimes in New Mexico while protecting victims and witnesses of criminal acts. The order signed by Governor Martinez directs law enforcement officers to inquire about the immigration status of those who are arrested for committing crimes.
“This order takes the handcuffs off of New Mexico’s law enforcement officers in their mission to keep our communities safe,” said Governor Martinez. “The criminal justice system should have the authority to determine the immigration status of all criminals, regardless of race or ethnicity, and report illegal immigrants who commit crimes to federal authorities. Meanwhile, it is important that we safeguard the ability of victims and witnesses to report crimes to law enforcement officers without fear of repercussion.”

It is unclear from my reading the executive order whether it applies to all law enforcement agencies in the state, or just to officers under the jurisdiction of the State Police.
I think it only applies to NMSP.
But it may drive the Illegal Aliens into the
sanctuary cities and increase crime in those cities.

That was my take too. If so, then it will catch a relatively small number of illegals as local police and sheriff's officers arrest most criminals. It may, however, encourage local officials to adopt an order similar to ABQ except, of course, Santa Fe where they welcome the illegals and the drug and gang-related crimes they commit.

Alamogordo, New Mexico (CNN) – When CNN interviewed Susana Martinez, New Mexico's Republican candidate for Governor, we got a surprise. Our cameraman John Torigoe was trying to clip the microphone pack to the candidate's belt when she pulled away and said "Be careful, that's a gun back there." Martinez tells CNN she has a permit to carry a concealed weapon.She was packing heat when she addressed a gathering in Alamogordo, New Mexico on Monday. She warned them not to get too confident because "as Republicans we're outnumbered."
and it nets about 10-20 illegals a week IIRC.
That is not near enough for a large City like Albuquerque.
Irving Texas has refered 1% of their population to ICE for deportation.
You cannot ascertain one’s status by appearance. The way they talk, behave, look away or run from the police are actions, not appearances.
DH - I see the forest and the trees. Asking people for their papers without reasonable suspicion or cause puts us all at risk eventually.
I was going to use an example of someone of pure German descent going to Germany. Without opening their mouth the Germans would know they were foreigners. The more astute ones would probably know by looking at them if they were Americans or Brits or South Africans.
Remeber that Martinez won pretty big in a state that is 50% Hispanic.
The Hispanic population of New Mexico (and rural southern Colorado) is culturally very different from what you see in LA or many cities. They are quite conservative and very patriotic.
It’s easy to tell most of them without even hearing them speak.
