Ga. Lawmaker Proposes Doing Away With Driver's Licenses
CBS Atlanta ^ | 1-31-11 | Rebekka Schramm

ATLANTA -- A state lawmaker from Marietta is sponsoring a bill that seeks to do away with Georgia driver's licenses.

State Rep. Bobby Franklin, R-Marietta, has filed House Bill 7, calling it the "Right to Travel Act."

In his bill, Franklin states, "Free people have a common law and constitutional right to travel on the roads and highways that are provided by their government for that purpose. Licensing of drivers cannot be required of free people, because taking on the restrictions of a license requires the surrender of an inalienable right."

Franklin told CBS Atlanta News that driver's licenses are a throw back to oppressive times. “Agents of the state demanding your papers," he said. "We’re getting that way here.”

CBS Atlanta's Rebekka Schramm asked Franklin, “How are we going to keep up with who’s who and who’s on the roads and who’s not supposed to be on the roads?”

“That’s a great question," Franklin said. "And I would have to answer that with a question, ‘Why do you need to know who’s who?’”

“What about 12-14-year-olds who want to drive? What would stop them?" Schramm asked.

“Well, what’s stopping them now anyway?” Franklin answered.

Franklin’s name is on the first 21 bills of the legislative session, including one that would require the exclusive use of gold and silver as tender in payment of debts by or to the state, as required in the Georgia Constitution

Thats kinda the point. Lack of a piece of plastic does not keep anyone from driving. Only the fear of getting caught without it.

One of the biggest punitive frauds ever perpetrated by government besides property taxes is forcing the peasants to re-register their same vehicles over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over....

I agree to a point, but I would like to know your brakes work.

Only mine? What about you government who rolled out the red carpet for 30,000,000 illegal aliens...They don't even insure their vehicle....What about their brakes? No biggy?

I don’t know how you’re insurance works, but with my policy as most, it is the vehicle that is insured, not the driver.

Throw ‘em under the jail then deport them when the sentence is over...every second of it at hard labor.

If this flies, remind me never to drive anywhere near Georgia with unlicensed, uninsured, and untaught morons behind the wheel. LOL.

Have you driven in GA lately?...they're already there.

I echo your sentiments

What are you going to do about the government who rolling out the red carpet for 30,000,000 illegal aliens...They don't even insure their vehicle....What about them? What about the harm they cause?

What are you going to do when a car full of drunk illegals broadsides your vehicle, killing your entire family, ejecting you, but not your legs, out the sun roof?

What are you going to do Palpatine?

Driving isn’t a right, its a PRIVILEGE.

Says who? Is walking a right? Is riding a horse or a bike a right? Who gives us the "PRIVILEGE" to drive and can he arbitrarily deny it to anyone?

The absence of a drivers license does not impede one's right to travel on roads and by-ways provided by the government. A Greyhound ticket, a taxi, municipal transportation and other means are offered for those unwilling to demonstrate their obligation to fellow citizens and pass a drivers test and maintain auto insurance.
Although this guy does initiate some interesting conversation, he is largely ignoring the unintended consequences of such proposals.

Not all insurance works that way.

In Washington state (and some others) there is such a thing as “broad form” insurance. It insures the driver, not the vehicle.

I got 3 rigs in my driveway. It got way too expensive to insure them all, and I was fed up with getting nickel-and-dimed all the time by my insurance company.

I told them to take a flying leap and now have broad form insurance, at quite a discount, and can drive any of my rigs at any time. Whatever I drive is covered.
