After 24 years in Canada, Rafik and Leila Baladi moved back to Cairo two weeks ago to settle down.
Now, like many other residents of the Egyptian capital, they're stocking up on bottled water and essential foodstuffs as chaos engulfs this sprawling city of some 18 million.
"We just don't know what is going to happen," said Leila, who along with her husband was pushing a shopping cart loaded with frozen chicken breasts, fava beans, milk and other items at a grocery store in central Cairo. "People are terrified to death."
Everyday life in Cairo has been turned upside down by the largest anti-government protests in decades in Egypt, which began last Tuesday and have surged since.

This could become a big problem over the next few days. You knwo that somehow the USA will be blamed if Egypt runs out of food.

That's what the mummy raids were all about:
Singular bad timing...
No political riots in Canada. There is no hint of food or fuel or water shortages. The ATM's are all functioning. The internet works fine. In fact, Canada shows every sign of being a prosperous first world democracy. Yeah, I'd rather move to Cairo. Who's with me?

Those guys weren’t the only ones stocking up. I replenished my 4+ year supply of non-perishables (i.e., everything that I can think of), and should be back to 6 months of food today.
The idea that this mess in the Middle East is not going to affect us is insane. Just watch the flow of oil...for starters.
Thank you, I was thinking the same thing.
These people are idiots.
Well, you are a very smart person. The folks in the story, who are buying FROZEN food, not so much.
Survivalism 101: Frozen food loses its value about 24 hours after the electricity goes out. Maybe they were so used to living in the utopia that is Canada that they forget about the living conditions in the armpit they just moved back to.
Bttt
In some parts of Canada frozen food stays frozen if you leave it outside. Egypt, not so much.
Thanks. Yea, if he can shut of the Internet with a phone call, it wouldn’t be very hard for him to go: “Taaaaa” and that’s it with electricity.
Canada also has the advantage of outside cold storage (this time of year). That couple needs a good lecturing from Ferfal.

Look at how much the price of gasoline has gone up in the past month. Though looking at the price of gas appears to show the riots were instigated. Just another hmmmm moment.
Frozen chicken?!? How the heck are they going to keep the chicken frozen or cook it when there's no electricity? I'm surprised grocery shelves are still stocked. That means people are still out and about and deliveries are being made. Either the riots are confined to a small portion of the city or it isn't as bad as what's being made of them. Give Americans a severe weather warning and the shelves are emptied within the hour.
I was at a friend's who had been sick for a few days. Their fridge was bare so gave him a ride to the store to get enough food for a couple days. They claim they are stocking up for the coming times but I certainly didn't see it. I went home and immediately went through my pantry. It's not close to what I'd like and I need to restock, but on a tight budget it's not bad.
Stock up on liquor and cigarettes for trading purposes. Plus if things really go to shyte you can get drunk. Stock up on Marlboros and Camel because the nicotine deprived will want something real. Not some namby pamby low tar crap.
