DALLAS A suburban Dallas teenager had to take on a waitressing job to pay $637 after being ticketed for using bad language in a high school classroom.
Court records show that teacher Michelle Lene heard Victoria Mullins say "you trying to start (expletive)" loudly in class one day last October. She was sent to the principal's office and given lunch detention. The next day, the school resource officer presented the North Mesquite High School student a ticket.
......The complaint said Lene was offended, and that Mullins' language was a breach of the peace.
Mullins acknowledges she was wrong, but said a classmate was getting on her nerves.

I wonder about things like this.
I know someone who was riding their bicycle, making a left turn at a corner, staying on the right side of the street, and a car came from behind, cut off the cyclist to make a right turn and the cyclist locked up their brakes to avoid t-boning the car while the occupants of the car laughed their head off at the bikers expression.
The cyclist immediately screamed WATCH WHERE THE F- YOU’RE GOING, YOU STUPID A-H-!!
And the cyclist rode off. Fortunately, a Ploce officer was Right Behind the car that cut off the cyclist.
The cop followed that car into the parking lot off the quickie mart, told them to remain until he got back, then went to get the cyclist.
The cop then told the cyclist that in order to give the car a ticket for driving to endanger and failure to grant right of way, he would have to...ARREST THE CYCLIST FOR SWEARING in public!
True story, the cyclist didnt want to get arrested, so the moron who ran him off the road and almost struck him was allowed to go free, because the cop said it was a greater crime to swear in public than it was to place someone’s life in danger.
I’m a teacher in Texas and lonestar is right - much of the time the parents act as sophists to excuse their child’s behavior.
Some other points in this case: 1) it is part of the law in Texas that students can be ticketed for bad language. My gut tells me that there is more to the story with this student than a four letter outburst. The kind of language indicated in the article is not what normally gets the student a ticket. 2) If there was instruction going on during this class then the students would not have had time for this altercation. Too many in my profession just don’t get it that the kids tend to stay out of trouble when you are actually doing something with them. Of course, knowing your subject helps too, but that’s another long discussion, isn’t it???
$637 fine for cussing? Frankly, at that point in my life, I’d have told the judge to go (obscenity) himself. I’d take the jail time.
Hauling a child before a judge where the judge can impose a $637.00 fine for using some offhanded word is ludicrous. It's not a CRIMINAL act to swear, but applying an outrageous fine to a child, makes it one and sends a very wrong, convoluted signal!
Punish the child alright in an appropriate manner. Here's a novel idea, teach the children manners!
Show this to Danny?
Lots of idiots in this story.
“......The complaint said Lene was offended,”
You are in the wrong job, you delicate flower.
“Mullins acknowledges she was wrong, but said a classmate was getting on her nerves.”
Hey, it’s her fault I said something. She was annoying me, so I didn’t have a choice but to say something to her.
I’d also add another $50 to the little thugette’s fine for poor grammar.
So when a teacher loses his or her cool and swears to the kids, that will result in a $637.00 fine as well? I mean you need to get exactly what you ask for these days.
Here is Dallas, a 10 year old student, that gets into a “play ground” fight, was fined $500 and a two day suspension. Kids are not allowed to have “normal” reactions they must act as if they know all rules and are adults before they are children. A few educators would be helped if they studied the work of Piaget instead of the crap taught in the political correct schools of teacher colleges.
But football coaches have to teach something! LOL!
Actually, one of the best HS teachers I had was the head basketball coach who taught World History...and our team won state.
I was a soph and still remember his "lesson" on swearing. He said if you use a four letter word to insult somebody and they understand it, they aren't as insulted as if you use a four or five syllable word that they don't understand. "Call them a procrastinator...they won't know what that means and will be highly insulted."
"Revenge generation".
Funny, accurate...brilliant.
In my state, fines such as this go into the general fund.
The general fund finances the state school system.
70 years ago, my school administrators would look for any violation that could result in a fine that would go to the general fund and report it to the cops.
Not student violations, but violations by the public on or near school property.
I’m offended....yout Ticket is in the mail...
In your recanting of the story about the bicyclist, the dangerous driver and the cop, I believe many details are missing. I would be willing to bet that the cyclist used the same cuss words when talking with the cop and displayed an attitude. For, even if he had not heard the biker mouth off he did see the driver operate his vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public (not just that one particular biker). It would have been necessary to actually have been there to make a true judgment.
Perhaps in the suburbs the parents are the biggest problem. Not so in the city. Do you realize some high school students have been convicted of felonies, e.g., armed robbery, carjacking, and they’re wearing ankle bracelets? They are disrupting the classroom, turning over desks, and assaulting the teachers.
Do you realize there is an initiative coming out of the Obama administration to even out the discipline among the ethnic groups? If whites have a 5% expulsion rate then blacks cannot have a higher rate.
Just wait till they start applying that principle to incarceration rates.
Good Lord...she got in trouble because the teacher was “offended.” Not because it was crude, vulgar, demeaning, foul-mouthed and uncivilized behavior. No, because somebody was offended. This seems to be the only thing that people under the leftist/marxist spell worry about. What a pitiful sign of the times.
