CL you seem rather angry an insensitive toward CW. As you claim to be a teacher I find it rather worrisome. It's fine you point out facts, however it's ridiculous you think CW doesn't have a point. Which was the intention of CW's comments. We all know this is unbelievably unfair and quite frankly, disturbing!

Hauling a child before a judge where the judge can impose a $637.00 fine for using some offhanded word is ludicrous. It's not a CRIMINAL act to swear, but applying an outrageous fine to a child, makes it one and sends a very wrong, convoluted signal!

Punish the child alright in an appropriate manner. Here's a novel idea, teach the children manners!

If you read, you'll note that I didn't say whether it was appropriate or inappropriate to give citations. I write a referral that says, "So and so said 'f%ck' during class." I have NO SAY as to whether a student just gets a phone call home or whether they get in-school suspension or whether they get a citation. NONE. Is anyone here suggesting that a teacher just overlook the use of obscene/profane language?

I seem insensitive to CW? CW has posted several inaccuracies as fact. CW has suggested, with no knowledge whatsoever, that I am a teacher's union member. The entirety of CW's post was supposition rather than fact. As a matter of fact, I am a monthly donor at this website, and have been for years. Would it make sense for a union member to support this site? I am tired of hardworking teachers who do their very best to teach kids what they need to know being cast as socialists/communists/pro-GLBT types. I'm tired of know-nothings spouting their rants as factual. I'm sick of being bad-mouthed. I'm sick of some people at this website behaving exactly like their counterparts on the Left.

I guess I'm all alone here, since I think that it was absolutely BRILLIANT for the school to hit the student exactly where it would be most effective at her age for impolite, antisocial behaviour: in HER MEAGER WALLET! It appears that her parents may be slacking in thier obligations to teaching the young woman about apropriate behaviour, but somehow I think there may be some parental backing in this disciplinary action.

I suppose I'm far too mercenary or hard right for the bleeding hearts I've read on this thread.

Words have meanings, and rude words SHOULD have undesirable consequences. This girl got a CHEAP lesson with a ~$650 fine, that she had to pay HERSELF! I'll bet she doesn't utter such vulgarity audibly in class EVER again !
