As seen on Fox News Channel's "Happening Now with Jon Scott and Jenna Lee" on January 28.
FORMER U.N. AMBASSADOR JOHN BOLTON: I think what's clearly happened today [in Egypt] is that the Muslim Brotherhood, the radical Islamist party in Egypt has called it's supporters into the street. I don't think it was present on the first two or three days.
I think after the Friday prayers the Brotherhood brought its people out. That's why the protests are even more extensive today. That constitutes no doubt about it a direct threat to the military government, and I think the failure of the other security forces to bring the demonstrations under control also now explains the presence of the military.
Let me be clear here, this is not just the Mubarak-family government. The military has ruled Egypt since Gamal Nasser and they over through King Farook.
It's the military that is the real government and they are not going to go peacefully.
I think the question is whether and to what extent the Muslim Brotherhood and radical Islamists have infiltrated the leadership. If the military holds firm it's entirely possible, although bloody, that the government can hold onto power. That doesn't necessarily mean Mubarak will be in power, but the military will be, and I think that is why this contrast makes it so important for people to understand, this is not a choice between the Mubarak government on one hand, and sweetness and light, Jeffersonian democracy on the other.
I don't think we have evidence yet that these demonstrations are necessarily about democracy. You know the old saying, "one person, one vote, one time." The Muslim Brotherhood doesn't care about democracy, if they get into power you're not going to have free and fair elections either.

That's my worry.
One man, One vote, One time.
exactly what ran through my mind
No, Bolton is clueless as usual. He and his neo-con allies have supported tax aid to these dicatators for years. Now...we are suffering the blowback and he, and his ilk, have no way for us to respond.
Bad to worse. I find it highly suspicious this kind of movement is occurring in nations like Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. Guess who they surround. Were I a betting man, I'd wager Iran had some hand in this.
Bolton 2012.
If they are Muslim, you can bet there will be neither free or fair elections. In fact, there won’t be any elections, just death.
So, bascially, “Here’s the new crowd, same as the old crowd.”
I expect Bolt is correct. The reporting I've seen so far has been short on explanations of just why they are rioting, or what, if any, specific complaints and demands are being voiced. Sort of mystery so far. Maybe they want to scrap the peace treat and attack Israel again.
Iran started out as a students’/workers’ revolt. It became co-opted by the radical islamists. (Whoever is more willing to use the most violence, wins.)
After the dust settled, many Iranians I knew went back to help establish a more ‘liberal’ policy. They were never heard from again. Tales came out about torture and firing squads, but they were never confirmed.
If I were Mubarak, I'd declare war with Israel right now. When all else fails, Islam drops infighting if it means they get to shoot at some jews.
This is the best article I have seen so far today about what has been going on in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Jorden, etc. I thought that this is a pro democracy movement, I am starting to wonder if it is in order to bring back the glory of a long lost Muslim empire instead. Most likely the later.
Some highly skilled can-kicking (using OPM) that worked for a generation. Too bad that the trend is toward whabbism. Fifty years of SA can-kicking has created some definite structural problems in the ME.
I predict: every radical Marxist and Muslim faction in the World will make their move in the next two years while there's a Fellow Traveler in the White House.
All you Jews who voted for Obama, you can kiss your homeland good-bye.
Mubarak regime falls, an Iranian armed and led group of radicals takes over. Nukes soon to arrive.
Suddenly it's not about one or the other, it's about a nuclear arms race in Islam.
I believe those payments to Egypt were part of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Not sure they are optional, or if Bolton had anything to do with the terms of that treaty.
Could we be seeing the next President of the United States in this very article?
I like Bolton, but I absolutely agree - one can NOT manage Mid-East dictators or Islamists. They have been treacherous since the beginning of time. Its best just to avoid them as much as possible.
Israel is the only stable, pro-Western Republic in the entire Mid-East. Because of these simple advantages of freedom, wealth, and rule-of-law, a country of 8 million keeps 1+ billion Arabs on their toes. It shows who our natural Ally should be.
Whatta bunch of crap. The only "democracy" that will occur in NutLand is the kind that Iran conducts: everyone votes to agree with the Chief Mullah.
That's all that will happen here. Welcome to the Carter Moment: another middle eastern country is handed over to the Islamic Jihad.
