George Allen’s Problem
Red State ^ | 1/24/2011 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 01/24/2011 4:55:03 PM PST by mac_truck

Today, former Senator George Allen is expected to announce his intention to run against the man who beat him six years ago — Jim Webb. Of course it remains uncertain whether Webb will even run again.

[snip]

...former Senator Allen is going to have to address some serious problems other than the disastrous campaign waged in 2006 (he may need to talk about that too). Those problems are, put succinctly, his voting record, which is out of step with most of the grassroots activists engaged in Republican primaries today. I’m already getting lots of emails about this and, frankly, most people just want some accounting from Allen.

I think George Allen has a much better chance running for something of a more local office in his district than some national office.

His macaca comment is going to haunt and dog him for the rest of his life.

Memo to other potential candidates for political office: watch what you say very carefully....

“the disastrous campaign waged in 2006...”

I think that is overstating it. First, he lost by a few thousand votes. Second, 2006 was a very good year for the Dems. In retrospect, it is amazing he was so close.

I support recycling when it comes to paper and aluminum.

Recycling simply doesn’t work when it comes to dumb ass politicians.

The “macaca” moment is over. I think VA is ready for George Allen again. We’re wise to the media and their BS.

You don't get it. Allen lost because of his ridiculous groveling apology which made him look weak. The guy had no business running for re-election when there was reports he was going to declare a presidential run.

Not a very smart politician.

Yeah this RedState a*z clown is a RINO and Diablo. I went to that site a few times and it really s*cks. He is a Romney, Newt and McCain “man.”

Allen is much better than the s**t in Tenn with Corker and Alexander or that open-border RINO scum and LBJ Republicans in Texas in Perry, Cornyn and Kay Bailey.

When you lose by .39% of the vote, virtually anything you did wrong can be called the reason why you lost. I’m not trying to pump him, but I think it’s a good thing for him to be in the mix. It certainly makes a lot more sense for him to be in the mix than it does for some of the guys who lost this time around. If you couldn’t win in this banner year for GOP candidates, then you just can’t win. It’s unlikely that there will be another year better for the GOP in our lifetime than the one we just had.

“I think that is overstating it. First, he lost by a few thousand votes. Second, 2006 was a very good year for the Dems.”

Third, VA is GOP-leaning but is a swing state, that went for Obama. Fourth, the WashPost engaged in a PR campaign to oust him.

” In retrospect, it is amazing he was so close.”
The fact that it was close and new GOP energy in VA gives him the edge in a rematch.

Allen blew up a lead of 20 points and lost to Webb in a contest most Dems did not expect to win anway.

It was a disastrous run for relection and a text book example of how not to run for office. Blaming it on Bush etc doesn’t wash.

Allen is a spent politician and the GOP bench in VA has a lot of other fresh talent to take that seat back.

I keep hearing that he wasnt a good Senator and that he didnt vote right, but I havent heard anyone say what votes he made specifically that were wrong.

From the article:

"But during his one term in the U.S. Senate, some Republicans complain, he backed President George W. Bush’s proposals to increase spending; supported No Child Left Behind, a costly program to create a national education report card; favored a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries; and voted to expand the Hate Crimes Prevention Act to include crimes based on sexual orientation."

"There was also the vote for the debt limit, the flip-flop into support of ethanol, gun control issues, the morning after pill controversy, and, perhaps most troublesome to tea party activists, the money he took from Freddie Mac concurrent to his refusing to push for government sponsored enterprise (”GSE”) reform."

“Fourth, the WashPost engaged in a PR campaign to oust him.”

Well thats the problem isn’t it, If Allen could’nt handle WashPost then how is he going to handle Obama or the Dem machine?

The WashPost did try the same on Bob McDonnell and it blew up on their face as Bob McDonnell is a far more skilled politician.

“The fact that it was close and new GOP energy in VA gives him the edge in a rematch.”

I agree. Also, as for supporting the misguided policies of Bush 43 - that’s simply called party loyalty. In retrospect it may look weak, but with a good leader, it’s very important to have in your ranks.

Allen will do just fine, now that people better understand the stakes involved and don’t wonder off on petty concerns.
