Washington (CNN) When the Senate Tea Party Caucus convenes for the first time Thursday, one of the movement's biggest stars will be noticeably absent.
Alex Burgos, spokesman for Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio confirmed the event is not the senator's schedule, but said he has not made a decision regarding caucus membership.
"Senator Rubio is proud of his relationship with the tea party movement and shares its commitment to tackling debt, defending the free enterprise system and restoring our limited government tradition," Burgos said in an e-mail to CNN. "Ultimately, he hopes Floridians will judge him on his voting record and his commitment to delivering on the promises he made through the campaign."
Burgos added that Rubio will join the Senate Steering Committee, a group chaired by South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint that meets regularly to promote conservative policies and legislation.
Rubio, who received early support from the Tea Party, told the Florida conservative blog "the Shark Tank" that he's "concerned" the Tea Party is abandoning its roots.
"If all of a sudden being in the Tea Party is not something that is happening in Main Street, but rather something that's happening in Washington D.C., the 'Tea Party' all of the sudden becomes some sort of movement run by politicians," Rubio said.

How quickly they forget. Those who helped him can quickly remove their support, financial and otherwise. Next candidate, please step up!
What did you expect? He has ties to the Bushes
Was only a matter of time. The “Good Old Boys” club kicks in pretty quick when they get up there. Rubio’s another tragedy of the powerful in DC.
Trying to be “one of the boys”(and girls). How does one term Rubio sound?
From what I read of the statement above,
he’s saying that the Tea Party must remain grassroots
and not run by politicians in DC.
I don’t disagree.

I admire Marco Rubio. That admiration is based on things that I agree with and that he has said in the past. It may be (and I place emphasis on the word “may”) that, now that the election has passed we will begin to see a Rubio we’ve not known before. He may not fully understand the Tea Party movement and is still in the learning phase of his development. Time will tell.
Hopefully, he will not be as bad as the Senator he replaced.
To switch from Tea Party supporter to Tea Party Agnostic in less than 2 months, means that there is some nefarious activity converting people from populists to elitists.
And if this is true, the day the Tea Party is accepted in Washington is the day it becomes obvious it is corrupted.
I always expected it...his first instinct was to slam AZ when they passed their new immigration law.
He will vote for amnesty.
Look at the source of this info....one of the liars made up news organization....
More likely this is CNN "spin".. or even propaganda.. or disinformation..
Without the TpCaucus Rubio would not even BE THERE,,
Not quite what he said.
“If all of a sudden being in the Tea Party is not something that is happening in Main Street, but rather something that’s happening in Washington D.C., the ‘Tea Party’ all of the sudden becomes some sort of movement run by politicians,” Rubio said.
I’m in agreement with him.
Rubio tells DC to stay out of TEA Party!
Being from Florida myself I watch what folks do rather than what they say. I am not worried about Rubio nor my congressman Webster about going off the rails here.
It seems that most people read the headline and don’t bother to read further.
No. He is 100 percent correct. The Tea Party is for the regular folks. The mom and pop owners, the hard working folks. The politicians are the ones using the tea party and Rubio called them out. Why is it that we so quickly drop a candidate because they don’t go along with the Washington crowd? I applaud this young Senator 100 percent!!!!!
So what?
Yes indeed! It’s all about how they vote anyway.
This story is purposely constructed to demoralize those that supported tea party candidates. We’ll be seeing a lot of ‘propaganda’ like this during this Congress. Lies with just enough truth to make them sound convincing.
Just keep the faith and your eyes on the prize.
Exactly. Too many did not read the story.
