Requiring ID to vote could leave some behind at polls

Raleigh, N.C. — Republican lawmakers say requiring identification at the polls is a common-sense way to prevent voter fraud, but critics argue the move would open the door to discrimination.

House Bill 430 would require voters to present some sort of identification, such as a driver's license or Social Security card. Currently, people have to show identification only when they register to vote for the first time.

"People coming from out of state are somewhat flabbergasted of how little ID is required," incoming House Minority Leader Paul Stam said.

The incoming Republican leadership at the General Assembly plans to follow the lead of 27 other states that require some form of identification to vote.

"It's a no-brainer. People don't mind providing a photo ID. It's not a problem. They expect to do it. We ought to do it," said Sen. Neal Hunt, R-Wake.

Voting rights advocates acknowledge most people already need identification to get by in society, but they contend that voting is different.

Social Security cards are not to be used as ID. Without a picture an ID is worthless anyway

Yeah, the ones “left behind” would be illegal aliens. So what’s the problem?

Against those too stupid to bring their ID? Then they can run back home and get it. Oh, no ID at all? Gee, then you can't prove that's you on the voters' roll and you can't vote? Don't like it? Tough crap.

Obama wants you to have an ID to post on the Interwebs, but not to vote.

The first is so they can keep track of everything you do, and the second is to disenfranchise legitimate voters by canceling out their votes with hordes of illegitimate votes.

Yeah, they’re called non-citizens.

Blacks and other democrat minorities have to show ID for age verification, utility hookups, buying cars, opening a bank account, buying alcohol. If they are drivers they have ID.

They have ID. Besides many of these voter ID bills say they will provide free ID for the elderly and those that say they can’t afford it.

Bob Hall, executive director of political watchdog group Democracy North Carolina, said the state doesn't have a major voter fraud problem. It does, however, have a history of discrimination in voting requirements like the poll tax and literacy test, he said.

Nice straw man you have there Bob.

The poll tax and literacy test have been gone and done with for about 40 years. What is it you Libs say? Move ON.

In this day and age where identification is needed for everything from driving a car, seeing a doctor (new rules, at least where I live, require a photo i.d. on file), applying for a cell phone, opening a bank account, buying booze at places that take no chances...

...I find it hard to believe there are these poor waifs who only emerge from their homes and apartments once a year to trudge to the polls to cast a ballot and have nothing at all to help identify WHO THEY ARE.

I’d go farther and do away with “early/absentee” voting. It’s a recipe for fraud.

Who..

In this day and age doesn’t have an ID?

What can you possibly do productive without having some form of ID?

You could live on a cash basis, I understand. If that is the case you are not paying taxes. You can’t get a job without an ID of some sort, except on an all cash basis, and that means you are not paying taxes.

I feel like there is a huge hole in my theory, sort of a mind block, because of which I can’t possibly think of any reason a Voter should not have an ID.

I mean, for example:

If you have No ID:

*Where do you live? Buying a home and renting one requires ID usually.
*How do you earn income? Employers are required to get your ID.
*How did you play sports as a kid? Needed a birth certificate for that(Maybe this is why Obama sucks at sports)
*How did you attend school? Need ID for that, even if it is just a Birth Certificate.
*How did you used to cash your Tax refund?(ha ha I know)Check cashing requires ID, or I guess you could have signed it over to someone else for cash.
*Now, how do you get direct deposit for your tax refund? To open an account you need ID.
*You must walk everywhere you go, or take the bus, because you don’t have a driver’s license.

I know not all of the above applies to everyone without an ID, i.e. you don’t have driver’s license because you live in the city, But show me someone who has avoided all of the above needs for ID, that wants to vote.

Yes, I SAID IT!(Mark Levin reference)

Show me one person that will be “disenfranchised” due to the ID requirement and I will show you a:
TAX CHEAT
Drug Dealer
Prostitute
Illegal
or all of the above

Someone give me an example of a productive American that doesn’t have an ID.

Most states allow citizens to purchase nondriver ID cards in addition to driver’s licenses. They are a few bucks. If it’s that big of deal I’m sure most states could budget some money for discounted ID’s. I’d be glad to do that if it would cut down on fraud voting.

It would certainly stop the busloads of leftist voters from driving up from Mass to vote in Maine . Need one month waiting period between registering and voting. None of this same day voting.

About time. I used to work the polls in Carrboro, and it was flabbergasting the amount of outright fraud that you *knew* was fraud but couldn’t do anything about because you couldn’t ask for ID. College student “activists” bringing in homeless people with addresses that hadn’t been cleared off the rolls, letting them vote. It was ridiculous, but unless they gave an address for someone you knew personally, and thus could challenge, there was little you could do about it.

Requiring ID in North Carolina will hamstring Democrat vote fraud efforts. It needs to be implemented ASAP. This will be the first step in breaking the Dem stranglehold on this state.

A good comment by one of the posters there:

“I love the whole “poor people can’t get ID’s” garbage they tout. How then, do these SAME POOR PEOPLE manage to buy alcohol or cigarettes, or get checks cashed, or get food stamps and other benefits, or rent the furniture they rent, or rent videos, or get p.o. boxes, or make bail.

This is a NON argument this day and age.”

It has always been a non-argument.
