Raleigh, N.C. Republican lawmakers say requiring identification at the polls is a common-sense way to prevent voter fraud, but critics argue the move would open the door to discrimination.
House Bill 430 would require voters to present some sort of identification, such as a driver's license or Social Security card. Currently, people have to show identification only when they register to vote for the first time.
"People coming from out of state are somewhat flabbergasted of how little ID is required," incoming House Minority Leader Paul Stam said.
The incoming Republican leadership at the General Assembly plans to follow the lead of 27 other states that require some form of identification to vote.
"It's a no-brainer. People don't mind providing a photo ID. It's not a problem. They expect to do it. We ought to do it," said Sen. Neal Hunt, R-Wake.
Voting rights advocates acknowledge most people already need identification to get by in society, but they contend that voting is different.

I believe the other thing that clearly would slow down all the fraud would be to disallow “early voting” and “mail-in voting”. Absentee ballots should be sent ONLY with Notarized/Certified Authorizations, and to Military who are out of the area to vote.
Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa - it ain’t fair (racist too.)
LOL, of course it is!
Voting is a Democrat fraud specialty.
Hopefully!
Pertinent requirements:
Getting a North Carolina Identification Card is just like getting your driver license, except without the tests. For an ID card you will need:
-Proof of Residency;
-Proof of Age and Identity;
-It is required that you present DMV with a valid Social Security card. If you are not eligible for a Social Security card, you must provide documentation issued by the United States Government indicating legal presence.
The only ones who don’t want this are the cheaters and fraudsters. Putting a stop to them is one of the most important things that republicans could do. So many elections have gone to the wrong person because of the cheating. It takes no conscience to cheat, and that would mean that most cheaters are liberal democrats.
Yes, about time! I was shocked when I moved from GA to NC and saw how lax the voting is here. When I asked why there was no ID required, I was told black people felt it was intimidating and an attempt to keep them from voting like under Jim Crow. I came from GA we required ID to vote and we had Jim Crow in the past. I think the real reason was voter fraud. The dems had control of the legislature and the statehouse and planned to keep it by hook or by crook. And NC dems are crooks.
That is the story they trot out whenever the question of requiring ID to vote is raised.
I was told by a elderly black woman that it was intimidating to have to show ID.
My husband is Republican judge at one of the polls in Granville Co. He has some interesting stories to tell as well.
He will think this is great news.
CRY ME A RIVER. The chance of an extremely small number of idiots that can’t vote because they are not prepared are offset by a hundred times with the voter fraud that is happening in our country. I truly think this is one of the MOST important issues we have to fix, and fix now.
I live in North Carolina and something happened last year on jury duty that still has me wondering.
When I reported for jury duty, the bailiff announced to the jury pool that anyone who thought they should be excused from jury duty could line up in front of the judge to state the reason they should be excused. Most were university students who couldnt miss class and they were immediately excused, but one young man stated the following to the judge:
The young man said, I shouldnt be on jury duty because I dont live in this county.
The judge responded, The jury pool is derived from voter registration and drivers license records, how is it that you appeared on a jury list in this county?
The young man replied, I dont live in this county; I just voted here.
The judge excused the young man, but it left me wondering how many counties this young man had voted in on November 2, 2008.
And, yes, the young man was an obvious Democrat.
agreed. I mail, but I stop in to request the ballot.
I also believe that felons, the mentally handicapped, those living in group homes and severely mentally ill, those who need custodial care because they are intellectually compromised, should never vote.
I have heard this often but would someone (anyone) please tell me how.
My favorite is when an ACORN “volunteer” takes a box of absentee ballots, goes to the homeless areas of the inner city, and has homeless people sign and put an X in the Democrat box for each candidate, then takes the whole box to a Precinct in the inner-city, and drops the votes off. A lot of them hand a cigarette to the “voter”, and that’s the payoff. I’m sure in a lot of cases like this, the boxes on the ballot are already filled in, and the homeless just sign on the dotted line for the smokes or some change.
Texas already requires a photo ID or is that only those tha left their registration slip at home?
The type of people who won’t produce ID to vote are the type that I don’t want voting.
