Blinded by Ted Williams' surprisingly silky voice
Chicago Tribune ^ | January 15, 2011 | Sandy Banks

It was a nice story, and I hope it has a happy ending. But the tale of Homeless Man with the Golden Voice has already lost its fairy-tale patina.

Ted Williams is headed to rehab, after a whirlwind swing through Hollywood. And those legions of fans seduced by his story are probably feeling rather foolish right now...

It took an alcohol-fueled family brawl in a luxury Hollywood hotel to bring that image back into focus and turn a man hailed as inspiration into — as Dr. Phil proclaimed on his Thursday show — just another "lying crackhead." ...

People easily fooled by someone with a mellifluous baritone voice.
Now who does that remind me of?

Addicts are extremely skillful at lying and manipulating. Also they’ve acquired a certain charm that seduces people...for a while.

Ted Williams is the perfect metaphor for the Obama Presidency.

He’s become a bit of a disappointment. I hear LeBron is going to hire him.

“I hear LeBron is going to hire him.”

I get a kick outa Triv rippin’ up LeBron! When I lived in Milwaukee, I was a Bucks, and Warriors fan. Marquette were the Champs. The Bucks were the Champs. I met Lou Alcindor the day he came to town. Shortly thereafter, he moved in two doors away, into an apartment building owned and controlled by John Ballistreri (Mafia). The Bucks had Lou, Bobby Dandrige, The Big O. Man! If I didn’t have money for tickets, I’d collect pop bottles. Then I moved back to Cleveland. Went to a couple of Cav’s games, and completely lost interest in basketball.

A refreshing article.

I posted on a couple of places (here on FR too,) expressing hope that it would work out but saying it was highly unlikely; also that I’d rather see those who have worked hard, paid their dues, kept their noses clean and taken care of their responsibilities get his opportunities, and have him get a starter job on the ground floor and work his way up.

I was excoriated, of course, even here on FR, for not caring about ex addicts and not believing that people could overcome.

Well, I do believe people can overcome. But it my experience it is rare and takes a lot of time and hard work. Not an overnight shot at fame.

“there are reasons why they’re on that corner, and it’s a long involved process getting off, after so many years of devastation.”

this quote from a guy who works at a homeless shelter and knows what he is talking about.

And, unless he was severely abused or neglected as a child, this is a result of his own choices. He is a victim only of his own sinful decision. Still, I wish him well.

When your own mom has given up on you that’s usually a pretty convincing sign.

Williams can memorize lines without a teleprompter, well, a few anyway, if he prepares.

Your sentiments echo what has been said recently on the air (KFI in L.A.) by Tim Conway, Jr. I must say that the two of you seem to have nailed it pretty well.

What lottery numbers should I play?

Liberals want to feel good about themselves, meanwhile Haiti is in such bad shape, Baby Doc is headed back there for a coup now.

I said to my spousal unit when Williams was the darling of the main stream media: They created this story, now they are responsible for seeing that this guy does not go back to drugs, booze and the street.

I think the way Dr Phil is dealing with this guy is the correct and responsible way (now that they used Williams, when will Oprah or Matt Lauer invite the guy for a sleep over?)

Maybe Fools Goldenthroat can talk him out of it with his mellifluous baritone voice. I’m sure Baby Doc would swoon the way the brain-dead liberal media have. Fools Goldenthroat would say “You know you love it” amd Duvalier would leave Haiti and rush to the nearest store selling the homestyle Kraft mac & cheese that our homeless hero was pimping before he beat up his kid in the hotel room.

I know of a guy who worked a lot with the homeless in L.A. and he said the same thing. Most of them are there because they want to be.

I also know that a recovering addict or alkie stands a better chance of using or drinking when times get good. The times got way too good way too quick. It happens all the time.

This is yet another cautionary tale for those who believe that homeless bums are just one job offer or big handout of cash away from solving all their problems. It aint so. The larger lesson is that the liberal solutions for homelessness, poverty, drug addiction and so forth which involve massive, “non-judgmental” wealth transfers by the government, are not solutions at all, and that only a total inner transformation, such as that experienced in sincere religious conversions, can really do the trick.

“What lottery numbers should I play?”

The lottery is a voluntary tax. Don’t play it.

Put every dollar you would have spent into buying deeply discounted food you’d use anyway. Let’s say you only will eat Hellman’s Mayonnaise. Let’s say you would have spent $10 on lottery tickets this week.

Your store has a $1 off sale on Hellman’s mayo. Go buy 10.

You have now made ten real dollars, no tax, no risk.

Take that ten, and the ten you would have spent on lottery tickets next week, and buy a $20 sack of flour. You now no longer need to buy flour for the year. What would you have spent on bags of flour this year? $30. You are now up $30.

Etc.
