LIVE BLOG: A Memorial Service that Sounds Like a Campaign Rally
Commentary ^ | 1/12/2011 | JONATHAN S. TOBIN

While the content of President Obama’s speech was entirely appropriate, one has to wonder about the tone of the event. The fact that his speech was interrupted several times by cheers and applause lent what was supposed to be a memorial service the air of a campaign rally. While it was a fine speech, I can’t help but question the way his audience thought it was appropriate to behave in this manner or why the president didn’t ask them to calm down and stop the demonstrations. If you tuned in without knowing the purpose of the gathering, you’d be hard pressed to guess that this was an evening of mourning.

"If you tuned in without knowing the purpose of the gathering, you’d be hard pressed to guess that this was an evening of mourning."

Especially since there were boos when Gov. Jan Brewer spoke. So much for that call to civility...

I listened to the first twenty minutes on the way home. I was truly perplexed.

It sounded like a rally of some sort.

Odd.

Not Only Does the Obama Administration Have a Logo for the AZ Mass Murder — They’ve Got T-Shirts too.

I tuned in to see what 0bummer might have to say and couldn't believe what I was hearing. All the whooping, cheering, clapping and whistling. It sounded like a some kind of pep rally. Where there any foam fingers and vuvuzelas in the crowd?

Why the confusion, Jonathan? The students took the cue from the tee shirts awaiting them on the chairs.

Limbaugh asks the pertinent question: “how can someone with ears so big be so tone deaf?”

Left wing hypocrites with hate in their hearts are doing their thing, lying, cheating and stealing. It is all a grab for power. If they cared about people, they would have honored the Fort Hood victims as well. All this deception will turn back and bite them.

Mr. Obama pointedly noted that there was no way to know why the gunman opened fire, killing 6 people and injuring 14, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords.

We cant ask Jared?

It was truly bizarre. I have been to a large memorial service of the same size for four murdered police officers here in Washington, and there was nothing similar between the two. One was somber, beautiful, moving, heartbreaking, touching, and respectful. The other was a raucous circus.

And the Indian Blessing was so laughable. He not only blessed the four doors, he went on to bless worms in the ground, fish of the sea, and all the other creatures. Just strange.

Absolutely disgusting and appalling. Where have the civilized Americans gone? Where was the respect?

It was a clear picture of Obama voters.

It made me sick.

Obama also gave Sheriff Dufus cover refusing to admit that the Judge was meeting with Ghilcrist to complain anout the illegal caseload instead of just happened to meet her after catholic services as Dufus had stated..

“It sounded like a rally of some sort.”

I was surprised to see the NYT’s description of it- not so flattering:

“The scene at McKale Arena at the University of Arizona was a surreal mix of grief and celebration; it seemed to be part church service, part political rally, under the auspices of a college basketball event. Arizona Wildcats championship banners hung on the rafters above while long lines of people queued up at the concession stands for Cokes.”

Whatever happened to the days when memorial services were actually held in a church with prayers to God through Christ, hymns, solemn demeanors, and the focus on the deceased?

I remember when JFK,Jr. was killed a church in NYC held a memorial mass for the family. The setting, the readings, the Irish singers were so beautiful and dignified. This thing I saw tonight defies words. From the Indian chief and his ramblings about his ancestors to the over-the-top annoying, elitist college president that introduced everyone as though they were presenters at the Oscars, the whole “show” was about THEM. Seriously, who applauds at a memorial service? And what kind of person accepts it? When W. was president he usually waved off applause at events like this...not Barry. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

Exactly my feelings. I found only a few little things that I could argue with in his speech, but it was completely inappropriate the way people were clapping and cheering. Disgusting crowd reaction.
