"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be cured against ones will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."

That is also one of my favorites ....and to think it comes from a writer of mere children’s books

What have we learned in 2000 years? Absolutely Nothing.
Nothing ever changes but the cast of characters.
Great book! And Dinesh D'Souza's "What's So Great About Christianity" is a great read also with many references to C.S.s work. Is a terrific argument against atheism also. Tears them to pieces and spits them out.
We learned and invented the most important thing in history, indoor plumbing..
Printed on a sign over my desk at work.
"I live in the Managerial Age, in a world of 'Admin.' The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid 'dens of crime' that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice."
Great one - thanks for sharing.
Its something I try to remember when dealing with people I disagree with on religious issues.
