Californians can start saying goodbye to traditional 100-watt incandescent light bulbs now that the state has become the first in the country to require a new standard for the screw-base bulbs.
Experts say the new rules, which took effect New Year's Day, will save residents money and energy. California is already the nation's leader in energy efficiency standards.
As of Saturday, what used to be a 100-watt light bulb manufactured and sold in California will have to use 72 watts or less. The 72-watt replacement bulb, also called an energy saving halogen light, will provide the same amount of light, called lumens, for lower energy cost.
Similar new standards for traditional 75-watt, 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent bulbs will go into effect in California over the next few years, with wattages reduced to 53, 43 and 29 respectively.
The new rule does not ban incandescent light bulbs; it just requires those bulbs to be 25 to 30 percent more efficient. And it only affects incandescent light bulbs manufactured after 2011, not light bulbs already in use or on store shelves.

I am going to hoard lightbulbs this year. Clearing our the spare bedroom.
BTW, the new bulbs are 5 or 6 times the cost, they are very short living ... and are super toxic when tossed in the trash.
It’s been my experience that halogen bulbs get dangerously hot. I’ve replaced all of my halogens with toxic twisties, but still use real light bulbs when appropriate.
I can see a market for light bulb stores on the California/Nevada border, and on Indian reservations.
Follow me on this, please.
I live in the Alaskan Bush, about 300 miles west of Fairbanks. One of the things we’ve done here is construct a root cellar - actually an above-ground shed with an open floor, covered with dirt. It works well. The temps can be 30 below outside and 35 above inside.
We moderate the temperature using a simple incandescent light bulb. It works well.
In fact, it works so well that a lot of the earthies and other sustainable agriculture people are looking at it as an easy and inexpensive way to provide refrigeration out here, where electricity can sometimes run 90 cents a kilowatt hour and getting a fridge can take months on a barge. Right now we have potatoes, cabbages, carrots, turnips - as well as yogurt, cheese, and eggs from town, in long-term storage.
Except our beneficient federal overlords are about to ban the incandescent light bulb.
So they want to save energy, cut costs, and lower the “carbon footprint,” as it were. Except their regulations say otherwise out here.
Whatta bunch of f***ing idiots. And that understates it.
More Taxifornia pure insanity. Thank you liberal voters.
I will have a light bulb stand at Whiskey Pete’s
What’s the penalty for bulb-running?
I have 2 flood lights behind the house, one is regular incandescent and the other is CFL. Both are 100 watt and the CFL really looks anemic when compared to the incandescent, up close and at a distance.
Smuggling lightbulbs clearly will present some new problems....
_____
*100w lumen equivalent, medium base.
I’ve got several large boxes full of the wattages that I need. Started buying them a couple of years ago. Hopefully these bulbs will out live me. lol
Everyone wants to poison the people they interact with like leftists. Mercury poisoning mother ,brother, sister, He’ll eat you when you are dead? The entire Earth coated with mercury. I hate you bastards.
Kiss your freedom goodbye too... or you can get smart and remarket the old 100 watt bulbs as “heat lamps” or “glow bulbs” LOL
I travel to PHX 6 times a year. I buy Kalif “verboten” items there —— No Problema!
So is tinsel town going to tone down those megawatt flood lights that bounce around LA?
“We moderate the temperature using a simple incandescent light bulb. It works well.”
There was a posting here not too long ago, someone in Germany who was going to sell the banned incandescent lights as “electric hand warmers”
Indeed, I am calculating my lifespan as well. :)
