The snow is causing travel chaos across the eastern US.
A swathe of the US eastern seaboard is braced for an intensifying winter storm that is dumping heavy snow as it sweeps north.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and severe weather warnings are in place from Georgia to Vermont as temperatures continue to plummet.
Blizzards dropping up to 1ft (31cm) of snow are expected to hit New York and parts of New England.
South Carolina had its first Christmas snow since records began in 1887.
L/Cpl Bill Rhyne, of South Carolina Highway Patrol, said people were heeding warnings to stay off the roads.
Transport officials in Washington DC deployed 200 salting lorries, snow ploughs and other equipment to tackle the expected 6in of snow expected across the Mid-Atlantic region.
Blizzard warnings were in effect for Rhode Island and most of eastern Massachusetts including Boston. Forecasters predicted more than 1ft of snow from midday on Sunday until late afternoon.
States of emergency
Up to 18in of snow was predicted to fall on the New Jersey coast, with wind gusts of more than 40mph (64km/h).
Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina had declared states of emergency by early Sunday.

Vikings-Eagles moved to Tuesday night

I’m 30 miles SW of Philly, and we have about two inches total, despite it having started snowing at 1:45 p.m. It’s now 5:30. And they cancelled the Eagle’s game for this.
I just went out to shovel the driveway, to make sure I can get out for work tomorrow. We already have about 4 inches here in Suffolk County Long Island.....but I couldn’t find my gloves (as usual).
I lasted about 10 minutes outside before my fingers felt like they were about to fall off! It feels like sub zero out there!!
I wonder if he cheats at golf like Clinton did?
Snowed in Jacksonville, FL this morning.
Nothing stuck.
A year ago, I spent 2 weeks in intensive care after a fall, and I'm back to normal today, minus a kidney and spleen.
I'm not a sissy-boy.
I didn't suggest making a law. I do however shun and castigate those that let their dogs go splat on the highway, whether by lack of training or bad judgement or whatever.
And I don't want to run over anyone's dog after it already did the bounce/roll thing on the highway at > 50MPH.
Seriously.
I'm not trying to run anyone's life, but I'll damn sure comment, when it's stupid.
Lord knows I've recieved lots of unsolicited advice when it was appropriate.

It’s called teaching folks to understand authority.
Stay warm inside. I read NYC may get 17 inches!......
Your thread title gives me an idea.
All of this snow is a big “Shovel ready project”. They should take from the stimulus funds, and give the unemployed jobs shoveling/clearing snow.
However, I doubt many people would sign up. They would rather stay warm and collect their checks. Might get a few takers from those dropping off UE.
How did we every survive without the 24Hr Weather channels and radar maps? But somehow we did.
Through two decades of living along a rural road (fortunately, no other driveways close to mine) I have learned:
1 - Plow so that my blade pile is to the left of the driveway as I face the road...the plow truck will not be putting that back into the lane.
2 - Scrape down a bit of the road on each side of the driveway so there is less the township truck blade when it does get to the driveway.
3 - MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL - since there will be some plowed back in, get out and remove it as soon as possible after the plow truck leaves. It will never be less compacted and easier to remove than at that moment.
BTW 1/2 inch in the lower Susquehanna valley of Pennsylvania.
I bet you guys in Iowa are experienced in this stuff.
The MSM, being from NYC -DC, is in full Snowpocalypse mode!....
That’s what we conservatives like to call, hope and change in global warming theory.
Minus a kidney and a spleen?
You sure they didn’t sell them on eBay?.........
Well, it wouldn’t take two hours to drive from Greenwich, particularly at nearly 80 MPH.
And I put my 12-year-old beater in the garage, and I am now safe in my one-room apartment.
Had a foot here Thursday into Friday. And a full scale blizzard less than a week before - 9”... with 5” not long before that. Media goes into stormgasms here too... but since this one is happening in NY,NY - it will be America’s Storm to End All Storms on the nets and news channels on TV - so I’ll watch something else :)
I ‘member that one as well here in Michigan, boy, those were the days!!!
