Many Russians here aligning with Republicans

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Many Russian immigrants to the "red borough" of Staten Island are flocking to the Republican Party, saying that the national Democrats' "socialistic" policies remind them too much of the top-down oligarchy they fled in their native land.

With many of the borough's Russian arrivees already owning businesses and active in civic organizations, their muscle could help the Island GOP solidify electoral gains made this year, when the party took back congressional and Assembly seats.

Businessman Arkadiy Fridman said that the newly formed Citizens Magazine Business Club, a confederation of more than 50 Russian-owned businesses here and in Brooklyn, has aligned itself with the Molinari Republican Club (MRC) in an effort to increase the Russian community's political and economic clout.

“Who is a better leader Obama or Putin?”

In all honesty, I’d rather have Vladimir Putin as President of the United States right now.

Of course he’s not a citizen, and thus not “Constitutionally qualified” to hold such a position, but - hey? - who cares about that any more?

Regardless of what else may be said about him, Putin appears to be a true leader and fiercely nationalistic. He will use his personal power and the powers of his office to advance his nation in the world.

There is simply no comparison to be made between the two.

I’d prefer Putin!

State Sen. Diane Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn) said she understands the Russian aversion to anything that looks like big government, but thinks the criticism of the Democratic Party is off-base. ... she added, "you can't compare the policies of the Democratic Party with communism."

Oh yes we can!

Throughout the campaign it became more and more apparent that Staten Island’s Russians were on our side.

They are the same thing. No comparison necessary.

"you can't compare the policies of the Democratic Party with communism."

That is one HUGELY hilarious statement! It's like saying you can't compare cocaine with crack.

Putin vowed that they would get every bastard who was involved in the school massacre. And he kept his word, to the last man!

Not surprising. The Democrat party is little different from the Communist party they left behind

People who have lived under socialist oppression understand it far better than the pampered morons who vote for it here do. This goes without saying.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that these elitists on the left care about such things. They just believe that they are entitled to lead and live the kind of life they would deny to the rest of us. All we are to them are “the masses”, who don’t know how to “live right”, succeed, or spend our own money the “right way”.

As long as we endure them in government or on our college campuses, we are in danger. Make no mistake.

Here in Wasilla, at least, the Russian (Ukrainian) people are very observant Orthodox Christians. Many still wear their traditional dress.

Thank you. Merry Christmas to you, too. (I’m not ready for the new year yet ;-).

There was a large influx of Christian Russians to New York in the early 90s, many of whom were Pentecostals claiming “persecution” under Yeltsin. Most of them initially settled in Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge, but have been migrating out of Brooklyn to Garbage Island in large numbers for much of the past decade.

not true in NY and NJ. Most of the Euros living here (French, Italian, Scandanavian, German, etc.) tend to be liberal yuppie metrosexual types, even in suburbia. Even the proletarian Polish immigrants in Wallington and Linden, however, voted for Obama and the Dems in 2008/2010.
