STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Many Russian immigrants to the "red borough" of Staten Island are flocking to the Republican Party, saying that the national Democrats' "socialistic" policies remind them too much of the top-down oligarchy they fled in their native land.

With many of the borough's Russian arrivees already owning businesses and active in civic organizations, their muscle could help the Island GOP solidify electoral gains made this year, when the party took back congressional and Assembly seats.

Businessman Arkadiy Fridman said that the newly formed Citizens Magazine Business Club, a confederation of more than 50 Russian-owned businesses here and in Brooklyn, has aligned itself with the Molinari Republican Club (MRC) in an effort to increase the Russian community's political and economic clout.

Surprised this sort of story saw the light of day. No doubt you won’t be seeing this in the New York Times.

"the national Democrats' 'socialistic' policies remind them too much of the top-down oligarchy they fled in their native land."

No kidding!

What about the national Democrats' totalitarian policies? Remind anybody of Stalin?

I have been saying, as an American of Cuban heritage, this Democratic party is really reminding me of the stories my grandmother told me of Fidel and his minions.

That's okay, the democrats have the La Raza type illegal immigrants.

Also worth mentioning, this S.I./S.Brooklyn congressional district just elected a Republican congressman endorsed by the pro-life, “evil”, “nutty”, “hick” from Wasilla.

There is a large Russian and Eastern European community in the town where I live. They are appalled at how they struggled to come here, and now are facing the same thing all over again.

The democrats haven't figured out a way to appeal to their sense of racial solidarity yet.

Give em time.

DOH moment! People coming from communist countries or any type of dictatorship vote Republican. They know first hand the threat of government control. Seriously, it took this guy so long to figure this one out?

Miami is another prime example, where mass majority of Cubans are Republicans and if you say you are a Democrat in Little Havana you are looking for a beating. These people don't kid around when it comes to their freedom!

I have Russian neighbors who question why they left Russia to come to America for a better life for there families only to see that this nation is turning into Russia. They are nervous about Obama’s and the democrats intentions. Needless to say, we have some good conversations.

Ain't that the truth. Still, it's good to hear this from the Russian community. I'm still bumfuzzled that the mining unions voted for him even after he swore to shut them down. Same with the Jewish and Catholic communities who are still behind him.
