Old-time football players like to say they wouldve played for free in the parking lot, such was their love for the game.
It might be the hyperbole of men who watched too many grainy Knute Rockne clips, but you want to believe that they believe it. You want to believe that they were so tough and so committed to the game that they wouldve sacrificed the skin on their elbows to make a tackle near the third parking stall on the left.
You want to believe in someone who loved the raw violence of a sport so much that he wouldve been willing to sacrifice body and paycheck to play it. You want to believe in his craziness and passion.
You want to believe mostly because it wasnt your body or your brain or your skinned elbows.
That might explain the gap in emotions between the public and Bears and Vikings players heading into a game tonight that very well could be played on a skating rink.
The players are worried and angry about the possibility of injury at the University of Minnesotas football stadium, which was jarred out of its winter slumber by a caved-in roof at the Metrodome eight days ago.
The public? Not so worried. Or, if fans are worried about players injuries, its not for humanitarian reasons. Its for playoff reasons.

If this wasn't the last home game of the season I would have expected them to play this game in Green Bay which is an excellent cold weather stadium with the added benefit of 70,000+ Packers fans who would be very enthusiastic supporters of the Queens in their quest to knock off the hated Bears.
No wonder the Vikes haven’t been back to the Super Bowl since they moved indoors, The Met wasn’t called “The 23rd Viking” for nothing.
Well then, let’s cancel the game and give both teams a win so no one gets their feelings hurt.
Aw, c’mon Vikes...

2. Chicks dig scars
3. Glory lasts forever.

I think the Packers would have a fit about the Bears getting an extra home game during the playoff stretch.
SOOOOOOOO cold. I went with my uncle; he had a thermos of "coffee" to keep him warm.:) I made frequent trips to the ladies' room to thaw my toes.
The "Purple People Eaters"..........those were the days.
I now live in Green Bay and my loyalties lie elsewhere. But for this one night I am a Vikings fan again.
SKOL!!!!
A lady bought at ticket for her and her 10 year old son. The lady returned their tickets because it would be too cold for her little boy. In the day, a 10 year old would sleep in his igloo that was built along the garage. I blame the siss-ify-cation of children on the public schools and wimpy parents. 30 below didn't matter, when my mom had enough, all 4 kids were thrown outside. Only once did I lick the fire hydrant.
A Chicago newspaper wrote this?
Awwwwww.
Are da little itty bitty Bearsy-wearsies afraid they might fall down and go boom on the hard old ground?
Maybe we can find some college players who’d like a piece of the pie you Bears take home for your two-hour effort.
Yes, I saw “Lombardi” on HBO also. The difference is that no one bitched. They accepted it and played the damn game. Oh, and Jerry Kramer was offsides.
Maybe they can schedule the game in Namby Pamby Land.
Genius.
Just heard a great line about the kicker who made this complaint on ESPN Radio:
“The are only two times when you should listen to a kicker. When they are talking about kicking or when they are talking about online shopping.”
LOL
Two words. Ice Bowl. When football was played by men.””
Lombardi would take all these sissies to task. He would laugh at these kinds of stories until he peed his pants, IMO.
The playoff game the Giants and Packers played a couple years ago was even colder and no one complained.
Actually, the Packers went on to play in (& win) Superbowl II two weeks later.
Purple People Eaters???
So would Bud Grant.
I remember watching John Brodie and the 49ers beat the Vikes at the Met in the 1st round of the playoffs after the 1970 season. That game made me a 49er fan for life (recent history notwithstanding).
But I also grew up liking the Vikes. Their offense rarely blew anyone away, but the defense and special teams were incredible.
Tell me about it.
Growing up in Maine, Mom's rule was that it needed to get up to zero (F) before I could go outside. And that "zero" was negotiable depending on how irritating I was.
Now, I live in the south. The actually cancelled school one day here due to "extreme cold" (lows in the teens) that was going to happen THAT EVENING! Not even DURING SCHOOL HOURS!
I had to shake my head sadly at that one.
Headed out into the bitter cold southern winter for my daily walk. It's 40-ish, I'll bring a long-sleeved shirt in case it's windy.
