Word that the world's largest military power will allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military brought strong and swift reaction Saturday, with supporters declaring a civil rights milestone and detractors insisting it would weaken and divide the armed forces.

Warren Arbury of Savannah, Ga., served in the Army for seven years, including three combat tours, before being kicked out two years ago under "don't ask, don't tell." But he said he planned to re-enlist once the policy is officially abolished.
"As soon as they give me the go, I'm going to march into the recruiter's office," he said. "And I want retroactive pay and rank."
Arbury said a fight for other social changes such as allowing gays to marry and easing obstacles they face in adopting and raising children still lies ahead, however.
"I think it's one step in a very long process of becoming an equal rights citizen," he said. "Even though this is really huge, I look at it as a chink in a very, very long chain."

dormee: “They are human beings with feelings just like you and I. I am thankful for anyone who enlists to protect my freedom.”
The military prohibits all sorts of people from serving. It’s not about “feelings.” It’s about military efficiency. Should we allow the obese to join? What about people with physical disabilities? How about people with mental illnesses? What you wrote sounds all nice and fuzzy and touchy feeling. Why can’t we all just get along, eh? Well, the military is not a civilian company hawking a better mousetrap or delivering pizzas. We don’t just all go to our separate homes outside of our work hours. We live, work, sleep, shower, and use the latrine together. Get a clue!
Oh yeah Grizz! One more ZOT coming right up and deservedly so for that poster I’ll bet. That was an incredible thread earlier today and Jim R. could not have been more clear about this subject. Our great military will suffer from this repeal, no question. If I were a younger person deciding to or not to enlist, my decision would have been made today....there is no way in heck I would EVER bunk next to a queer.
There are "Former Homosexual" organizations. The media doesn't like to talk about them.
By the way, praying for God to make something happen isn't enough. You're called on to "repent." That means "turning away" from your sin.
Many years ago, I was outside in the smoking area behind my High School having a smoke between classes with some fellow students. One individual made a remark about someone, using an anti black racial slur. I told him not to do that around me. He then called me a N***** lover and asked if I intended to marry a n*****. I said I would marry what ever woman I wanted to marry and it was none of his damned business. As I left, he shouted N - lover over and over.
Years later, I heard from a family member that his sister caught him "in the act" with another guy and was telling everyone he was gay.
If being gay was really "just the way they are and beyond their control," you would think he would be a bit more tolerent. The problem is, they know what they're doing is an unhealthy perversion even though they try to convince themselves otherwise.
This will do nothing for our security and put at risk our troops. You can bet some of the best of the best will be leaving and those thinking of joining, will think twice before doing so. This is crazy.
They can serve their country without constantly reminding us of their lifestyle choice.
SOMEDAY, ‘NONE OF THIS WILL MATTER’
Arbury, meanwhile, hopes he lives to see the day that soldiers such as himself will be reinstated.
He contends that personal experience has shown him that younger soldiers don’t have a problem with gays and lesbians.
“I think our definitions of sexuality will change before the legal jargon changes,” he said. “I really think 20-25 years from now, none of this will matter. ... But hopefully the whole thing will be repealed and I can come back as an officer.”
Most schizophrenics don’t have a choice about whether they are mentally ill or not either, just like homosexuals who have their particular mental disorder.
Should we allow schizophrenics, psychopaths, or sociopaths in the military as well?
God says homosexuality (male or female) is an abomination... Now toooo many in this nation disregard at their and our nation's peril the consequences in 'we the people' blessing something that the Creator calls an abomination....
NOW to be clear I could care less what two consenting adults do behind closed doors....their doors... NOT public doors and the military is public tax payer funded, and government is 'we the people'.
“dormee’s” last post prior to tonight was DEC 30, 2008.
This looks like it may be a a case of screen name hack/hijack.
How insensitive of the homosexuals.
After all, now all the uniforms can look exactly alike (unisex)...and there is no longer a need for the description "distaff".
And so it goes....
The Senate can legislate tolerance, but they cant force anyone to respect homosexuality

Amen. Wiser words never spoken, right there!
Born that way or not, they can be test dummies for AK47 rounds as far as I am concerned, if they insist on acting out their perversion and enlisting others.
From some of the reactions I’ve received, let me make it clear that I think this vote was a disaster for our nation!
The military is not a place to carry out social experiments. You are there to do your job, not carry on about your sexual predilections, whatever they are.
This will not end well; there will be problems.
Funny thing, I think (IIRC) back in Slick’s day, the Serbs were able to fool some IR and other sensor detections of their armor and other things, by painting them pink, or some variation of such.
Colors reflect not only light, but temperature. Now to the human eye, that’s a silly paint scheme, but sensors... Hopefully, we’ve corrected that deficiency.
But I get your meaning, and it’s horrifying.
I pray for our men and women in uniform.
“Theres so much hate on FR that Im not sure I want to be on here anymore.”
In this context, ‘hate’ is just another way of saying that no one should be able to disagree with you.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Yesterday I had to survey the home of one of these perverts who hid his lifestyles before he finally took his life. I did not realize what a sick human he was until we went through his belongings. I'm sickened to think what our force will be when men like this will be allowed to serve in the open.
This has nothing to do with homosexuals and everything to do with PC and the homosexual agenda. If they are that way, fine that’s there business. You are going to have law suits from each side. I would not want to bunk with a lesbian because I’d be constantly thinking, is she hitting on me? And if she really is hitting on me, do I tell, or do I just stay uncomfortable? Do we really need the extra stress? Do we really want this when our troops are on the battle field with all the stresses that go with it and just pile on more. It’s no different then putting the opposite sex in the same sleeping arrangements, bathing arrangements ect. Your just asking for trouble. Somebody is going to get mixed msgs. or the right message and it would be no different then sexual harassment. This is just plan stupid.
