"This is precisely the business-as-usual behavior that Republicans told Tea Party voters they wouldn't engage in.''
-- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) before casting a grudging vote for a tax compromise struck between his party and President Obama.
The Senate advanced the tax deal struck between President Obama and the GOP with an astonishing 83 votes. You couldn't get that many votes for a resolution in favor of Santa Claus.
But a tougher fight now lies ahead on a $1 trillion plan to fund the government for the next year.
The tax deal vote was a cannon shot over the bow of House Democrats. A piece of legislation with this kind of broad, bipartisan support isn't supposed to be tweaked, it's supposed to be ratified by acclamation.
And while House Democrats are still grousing about President Obama caving in too soon to Republican demands on the extension of all current tax rates, the third of the $900 billion plan that is either new spending or tax incentives looks pretty good to Democrats as the reality of a GOP House majority draws nearer.
Plus, a Democratic revolt in the House might permanently hamstring Obama. If Obama cannot speak for his party in Washington when negotiating with Republicans, he's already a lame duck.
But now comes the harder part.
The House, which failed for the first time in 36 years to even offer a budget, has offered up a $1.1 trillion spending package to cover the next year. Senate Democrats have a similar $1 trillion measure.

To paraphrase William F. Buckley, McCain is standing athwart history mumbling “Yeah, whatever, I guess.”
And to paraphrase the character of Captain Queeg ... he’s still playing with those little balls of his.
They should consider what remains when the ballot box no longer works
“well put”
Since 1974, the year they were too busy going after Nixon. This time they were too busy passing socialized health care.
“If you pull out all your guns to support a liberal, then you can be expected to be held somewhat responsible for what that liberal does. I believe the legal term is Guilt by association.”
Huh? He wouldn’t have been out of office yet. I take back my Huh and replace it with a Duh.
Ah, but the theme of McCain voting as liberal is going to played out over and over again during his next term. You shall see.
I can’t believe that after 20 years I still fall for the Republican “we’re gonna limit/reign in government” bs.
If it sucks so badly, Senator McCain, then why did you vote for it? Would it be possible for you to make it any clearer you have no principles in your entire body?
Only someone with HUTA syndrome would expect otherwise!!
A government of the elite, by the elite and for the elite.
You think I didn’t know that. What difference does it make. I mean what are you going to say next year when this happens? I have made my point, and will drop it now. As I can sense when a flame war is beginning, and It is pointless to engage in one. That is one of the things I learned here over the years. You have your thoughts. I have mine. I shared them. That is all.
“You think I didnt know that.”
Didn’t appear to, Professor.
Voting has become the opium of this democracy. You do it and you get a temporary high then reality sets in and you get depressed.
The Tea Party Movement / 2010 midterms were my last glimmer of hope in stopping the destructive policies of the left; it was either now or never.
What I thought we won has turned against us, we’ve been duped.
Sarah Palin is not and never has been responsible for the actions of the McCainiac. To make that claim is ludicrous.
Defeatism so soon? Cut me a break. You KNEW as well as the rest of us that the Lame Duck congress was going to shove a whole slice of the Obama agenda down our throats before they were dragged, kicking and screaming, away from Capitol Hill. What, you hoped they’d have an ethics attack?
“Sarah Palin is not and never has been responsible for the actions of the McCainiac. To make that claim is ludicrous.”
The learned professor has stated his case, bashed and run. He’s “taking the high road” and not deigning to answer anyone because he “senses” a flame war and it is beneath him to mix with the rabble.
You're not alone. And it's been longer than that for me. But at least I thought the pubbie leadership would at least GRUMBLE a little about this raping of the Republic even if they didn't start screaming at the top of their lungs like they should be doing...
Guilt by association is a logical fallacy.
The Republicans folded / jumped ship / screwed us less than a month from taking control of the House. This is not the party I was lead to believe they are.
