US Sen. Brown says he will not support 'DREAM Act'

Sen. Scott Brown says he will not support the DREAM Act and called the bill aimed helping illegal immigrant college students "backdoor amnesty."

Massachusetts Republican made the comments Monday during a Salvation Army charity event in downtown Boston.

The federal proposal would allow some illegal immigrants to qualify for permanent legal residency by graduating from college or by joining the military. The Senate is slated to vote on the measure this week.

But Brown said he wasn't supportive of the bill.

Brown's remarks come as a coalition of educators, religious leaders, and immigrant advocates made a last ditch appeal to Brown to support the proposal.

Brown has also been a target of a national campaign by advocates trying to persuade the moderate Republican to support the measure.

It appears there are 39 votes against cloture, and 12 uncommitted votes.

We need 2 additional NO votes from 4 Republicans (Collins, LeMmieux, Murkowski, Snowe) and/or 8 Democrats (Baucus, Conrad, Dorgan, Hagan, Landrieu, Manchin, McCaskill, Stabenow).

Snowe and Lemieux have indicated they are leaning to NO but their votes are not considered firm by NumbersUSA.

2 Republicans are committed to YES - Lugar and Bennett. 3 Democrats are committed to NO - Ben Nelson, Tester and Pryor.

In his campaign, Scott Brown was clearly on the conservative side on 3 issues: healthcare, immigration, and the war on terror.

I’ve heard from a pretty good source that Snowe is actually pretty firmly a no. Unless something changes (like enough on the other side to make it meaningless) she is expect to just say no. If there is some sort of mass defection, she may go with it, but not if she is the “decider” vote.

Since he began his campaign and getting elected Scott Brown has been clear and consistent against amnesty for illegal aliens, he is a principled senator.

“Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.”

I disagree with your analogy. A Senator Coakley would NEVER have been on our side.

Memo to all those planning to vote YES. 2012 will be here very soon and a yes vote will guarantee that we’ll be coming after you with no mercy.

B-B-But.......he’s a RINO!!! We can’t support him!! We need to purify the party, even if that means a Democrat will win his seat in 2012 and be in place for the next generation in Massachusetts!!

You got it. I’m darned glad for everyone of these RINOS in the senate. Give me a RINO to a RAT anyday. I know I’ll be called a RINO for saying this but only an irrational person would disagree.
