Princeton students nix alternative hummus brand (Israel)
Washington Post ^ | December 4, 2010

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton University students voted down a referendum by a pro-Palestine student group calling for the Ivy League university to expand its hummus offerings, the school's student government said Friday. It was a quirky campus vote about a chickpea dip that delved into international relations. The student group Princeton Committee for Palestine wanted university-run stores to sell an additional brand, arguing that Sabra, the only brand currently offered, supports human rights abuses. Sabra is based in Queens, N.Y., and Richmond, Va. Company officials say the firm makes donations only to charities in North America - and not to political causes.

The firm is owned by PepsiCo and the Israeli food conglomerate Strauss Group. Strauss contributes money to support troops in the Israeli Defense Forces...

Sarba officials say there have been attempts on other campuses to ban their hummus, but none has succeeded...The undergraduate student government said the referendum lost 1,014 to 699...

As media attention built about the vote, a pro-Israel student group Tigers for Israel fretted that the outside world might view the university, one of the nation's most prestigious, as a place hostile to that country.

Now we have an exact total of the Israel-haters on the Princeton campus. Too many Muzlims and their supporters there, if you ask me.

I like it. I never particularly think about the politics involved, didn’t even know it was an Israeli product. I am partial to the roasted garlic flavor, but the jalapeno is tasty too.

Sounds like it’s alright. It seems as if the Palestinians were upset because there’s an Israeli affiliation.

In general, if the Palestinians want to get rid of something, that something can’t be all bad.

ROASTED GARLIC! They have a sun dried tomato one that’s pretty damn good too.

I buy pita bread, split it, cut it into wedges, brush with olive oil and sprinkle on some garlic powder. Bake in the oven at 350 for 5 minutes or until golden and crispy. Dip and enjoy!

I’m buying some Sabra hummus today, and if I see a PETA ad, I’ll get some KFC too!

"Princeton University students voted down a referendum by a pro-Palestine student group calling for the Ivy League university to expand its hummus offerings..."

Really? This is important? You now have a right to more hummus offerings? Freedom of hummus choices?

Your tuition and tax dollars hard at work.

Hmmmmm, humus. Their jalapeno version is the best, I’ll eat it with a bag of Stacy’s Pita Chips.

Ack!! I LOVE Stacy’s pita chips. They are THE BEST. Have to make a huge effort to get them home from the grocery store because I have a tendency to open the bag and eat the entire thing on the way. Now I buy several bags.

I may have to go back to eating Sabra instead of Basha, I didn't know this story. Thanks La Lydia.

When I am feeling like a penny-pincher, Whole Foods has a pretty good house brand of EVOO.

Having lived in the middle east and enjoying really good hummus, Sabra is indeed the very best. I love it with pita or even better, naan, and some good Tabouli. I could live on that!!

LOVE those chips, with red pepper or pine nut Sabra. If only Sabra would bring back their black olive hummus , my life would be complete! :-D
