WASHINGTON (AP) — Elizabeth Edwards is gravely ill and doctors have told her she only has weeks to live, according to a family friend who is among those who have gathered with Edwards at her North Carolina home.

The family issued a statement Monday that said doctors have told her that further treatment for her cancer would be unproductive, and the family friend further described Edwards' condition to The Associated Press.

Prayers for this woman and her children. I can’t imagine for one moment knowing you are leaving your children behind (my mind can’t even go there) and she doesn’t have a good man by her side to help. May God end her suffering and give comfort to her and her family.

John Edwards is an interesting case. He can look in the mirror now and for all time and exchange a look with scum.

Certainly the stress put upon her by her no-good ex-husband hastened the day.

May God bless her in these difficult days.

She has very brave through all of this. My father died of cancer and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. May God grant her comfort and peace.

Prayers for comfort as she eases from this life to the next for her, and condolences for her family and friends. Cancer doesn’t care what party or beliefs you support, it kills indiscriminately, across the spectrum. :*(

I hope She and John can reconcile before she goes. It would be a tragedy if they didn’t.

And best wishes to John and his girlfriend at this most difficult time. It can’t be easy.

The Kids will have good father to help them through this. They’ll be fine. And Reilly is probably nice too. Maybe she’ll move in and help them adjust.

If this report is true and she is in her last days I pray she is a peace and is kept comfortable. Part of my mind wonders though does this announcement have anything to do with keeping him from being indited?

Too bad that her husband is such a turd. She has been fighting this battle for several years now and is just too tired to carry on. May the angel of death visit lightly on her.

There is no such thing as a long goodbye, for a long goodbye is sitting around waiting for death. I have taken care of many patients in the final stages of a terminal illness. The long goodbyes are reserved for those who have not made peace in this world or the ones who have spent every second since the diagnosis so worried about not dying, they forget to live.

I cannot think of what would be worse..sitting around waiting for my death or having my family mourn my death every single day before I died.

There is a time to fight and a time to let go. It seems as if the time to let go has come for Mrs. Edwards. From her message, I sense she has come to terms with her mortality. I doubt this will be a long goodbye.

Prayers up for this mother and her children. Cancer is still yet to be tamed in our time. Prayers that our medical system survives long enough to find a cure and a way to extend lives.

Yeah, cancer isn't always an automatic death sentence anymore, but there are times it still is. I have a friend that graduated a year ahead of me in high school (1984) who had breast cancer, so far as we know, she's clean in that respect but still has to deal with the aftermath of infections from breast reconstructive surgery and so on.

Prayers up for Elizabeth Edwards and her family, let's hope for a miracle. When I heard this tonite, I was really bummed, cancer is a disease I would not wish on my worst enemy.

Most patients know the end is imminent. The most amazing thing is how they worry abut other people’s feelings when they are the ones dying.

It sounds as if Mrs. Edwards has made her peace with this world and is preparing those who have been so supportive of her for what is soon to come.

Not a fam of either of the Edwards'. That said; offer my prayers for this woman, who will apparently, not see her children married; nor see or know her Grandchildren. That makes me sad for her. I do wish that John Edwards would suffer some major guilt; but why go there. He probably will not and so 'whatever'; it is his life - and karma.

'Prayers Up' for Elizabeth Edwards.

Each of us has made decisions we regret. Some end up impacting us more than others. Often times, the bad decisions of our youth live with us long after. So may be the case of Elizabeth Edwards marrying John.

However, she has had more than her share of grief. She lost a beloved child, there is nothing harder to bear, her scumbag of a husband cheated on her and humiliated her and now she faces an early death due to a hideous disease.

Whatever decisions she has made, she has paid for.

I pray for her a peaceful and painless end.

John Edwards is an empty-suit. If anyone embodies the classic liberal it’s Elizabeth Edwards. Cancer doesn’t take sides in a political sense. We’re drawn together together as compassionate beings by it which only makes us stronger. Having said that, I will keep her in my prayers and pray that she doesn’t suffer long.

I have been through this death of a spouse and I only wish that Elizabeth had the family/spousal love that my loved one did when he went away from us.

I hope Elizabeth has someone special who is there for her in the end.
