(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.

Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.

As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.

The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

I vote for the most conservative and wise candidate. Period. Hunter was it last time, hands down. Yet the stupid party decided RINO McCain was "viable". Remind me again how that worked out.....

I feel I need to remind you how the real world works.

In elections, the one with the most votes wins.

As conservatives, when we split our votes among several candidates (especially those who have no chance of winning) we allow the establishment RINO a chance to win with a plurality.

Purist idiots like you have far more culpability for the McCain nomination than the nebulous 'GOP' you blame...they don't get a vote, you do.

It will happen again this time...if we, as conservatives don't come together around ONE good conservative candidate, the establishment pick (Romney) will win with a plurality.

You can go to your grave proclaiming your conservative purity, the reality is people with your mindset are ignorant, easily manipulated tools of the establishment. Falcon up!

On the contrary, there are plenty of elitists on the right who are absolutely terrified of her and what her ascendancy represents, which is an end to their exclusivity in the ruling class. See what happened to Republican cronies in Alaska for reference.

Others on the right, and I'm not talking about the ruling class here but those who consider themselves "conservatives", have their own reasons for disliking Mrs. Palin, ranging from misogyny to likely oedipal issues (IMO), but I wouldn't classify that as actual fear, so in a sense, you're partially correct, but only concerning a small subset of the whole picture, IMO.

I am MORE concerned about those Republican operatives like Rollins who allowed Palin to be outmaneuvered in AK under false ethics charges, all while complaining on CNN about the “seriousness” of the charges later dismissed.

If she had not resigned he would be complaining about the “ethical clouds” and scandals that surrounded her...that corruption headlines daily sadly (wink-wink) have disqualified her from running.

Reagan wasn’t doing Bedtime for Bonzo movies in his ramp up to the White House.

I really can't imagine any politician, living or dead, turning down 6 hour long campaign commercials where one could craft their image, reintroduce themselves to America, and get paid for doing it. It's quiet brilliant. Of course I don't hold my breath waiting on “Mitt's Massachusetts”
