Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

Perhaps he's also speaking to those other people.
I am holding my judgment to see the reality show with Sarah and Kate. If she gets a strong endorsement from Kate, then the Kardashians will follow suit.
Then there is not stopping Sarah on her way to the White House!!
Gosh, what an idiot.
I vote for the most conservative and wise candidate. Period. Hunter was it last time, hands down. Yet the stupid party decided RINO McCain was "viable". Remind me again how that worked out.....
Next up to bat...Rollins.
These sissified-RINO-MSM-waterboys are so predictable and transparent.
Lame strawmen is all they got!
grow up..
Its pathetic when a 24 year old has to tell you to grow up isnt it ? you seem like your about 17.
“And I would be willing to take a hard look at her in the year 2030.””

Well, we’ll be on pins and needles awaiting your sagacious opinion of ex-President Palin at age 66.
Perhaps you could point out pissant's support for either Romney or Huckabee from his past posts.
She didn’t have the money ( she put herself through college !) to do it in four years straight and she has accomplished a hell of a lot more than you have, or shall ever accomplish!
Coons is going to be the next Senator from Delaware. O'Donnell and her supporters got proven wrong, and SHE got her keester whiipped.
She was also a down-ballot disaster for the GOP.
She will be highly sought after by the news media, as she was BEFORE her recent Senate defeat, because they cannot wait to have her on saying dumb things making Conservatives and Christians look bad.
She wasn't hand picked by Bill Mahr to be on his show because she was a reasonable and articulate spokeswoman for the cause, but because she was a convenient punching bag apt to say bizarre and outlandish and amusing things.
If the truth upsets you, by all means, go back to sleep thinking O'Donnell “whipped” Coon's “keester”, when he is going to be a US Senator, and O'Donnell will be a useful *(and unemployed) idiot for the left.
Also around this time he was a registered Democrat and president of a Hollywood labor union. For most of his life even Reagan was no Reagan.
Not sure why you repeat this BS mantra of me supporting Huck or Mitt. But BS it is.
people like goldstategop should fall on their knees and thank God that they were never a great enough person even be considered a candidate for leader of the free world.
there is no way they could handle the pressure. they would buckle and collapse under half the pressure Palin is under and she is not even President yet.
My exact sentiments......I would vote for her anyway because I would never vote for a democrat.....
Rollins is correct that Sarah Palin is inexperienced and that she is not an expert on most national issues.
Sarah Palin allowed herself to be outmaneuvering in Alaska and forced from office by a few political operatives with false ethics charges. She will face far stronger tactics if she runs for president.
While I agree with Sarah Palin on most issues, I am concerned with her lack of experience. I know there is no perfect candidate but I'm not sure she is ready to be president.
Do you have any appreciation for satire?
Ronald Reagan was still a liberal democrat when he was 46. Sarah Palin’s ability to learn and establish her leadership skills has been nothing less than of amazing.
O’Donnell will forever receive my gratitude for dispatching that worthless RINO in the primary.
He thinks she's terrific too, and you don't. So what? LOL.
CNN clown
builds straw man
knocks it down
Stupid
