Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

It is a full frontal attack on Palin isnt it? I believe she is responsible for alot if not most of the losses in the mid term, she called out Obama on everything. The other politicians/Republicans were completely silent. She single handidly took him on. NOW, they dont need her???? really????
Sarah ignore and move on! Lets Roll
Pissant seems like a pretty reliable guy, but then again I don’t camp out here and read every single post. Don’t shoot the messenger.
Every attack seems to solidify support even further - it's a heart thing, I guess. You'll have to ask the girls - nicely.
Oh, yes they all vote.
You know, there becomes a point when a catchy phrase becomes old and tired. This one has. Every time I hear someone recycle that mean spirited attack on Dan Quayle I think...sheesh, can you think for yourself and come up with something original? And at that point it starts to matter less about what they have to say and more about the fact that they think they are cute, when they aren’t. It was an ugly thing when Benson said it. It still sounds ugly. Shut up Ed and say something original.
Nobody in their right mind would compare Sarah Palin to Christine OD
Palin has been an executive of a state. she is a strong leader for conservatives in my generation.
What do you know? People were saying exactly the same thing about Christine O'Donnell one month ago and she really proved them wrong. We booted out that RINO Mike Castle and we whipped that Marxist Coons’s keester, just like our Sarah will vanquish the arch-RINO Mitt and then send POTUS back to Hawaii or wherever it was he came from. We populist fanboys know a great candidate when we see her, yes we do.
Ed Rollins, is the guy that bragged that during Christy Todd Whitman’s (the “blue blood” RINO ) gubernatorial election, in Jersey, that her had handed out “walking around money,in black communities, to suppress the black vote and then, when that came back to bite him, BIG TIME, tried to retract what he had said.
He’s a loose cannon, says crazy things to the press and when his comments get quoted, lies about never having said or done what he has said and done.
Jeepers. Did Eddie think that up all by himself? I guess I missed when Sarah claimed she was Reagan. Maybe I need to get out more.
Last I checked, Palin has actually WON an election against an entrenched establishment.
And O'Donnell, for all her flaws, did take out the uber-RINO Castle, who hardly would have been much better than the Dem. Castle loosing tightened the sphincters of all the Senate RINOs facing re-election in 2012.
So, once again, take off your water wings, get out of the kiddie pool, and learn to think and post like an adult.
Yep reliable to be ate up w/ PDS.
Ahhh..... the daily onslaught of a million words explaining why Sarah Palin is irrelevant.
Too damn funny. Even funnier because the people doing it are too damn stupid to know that they are doing it. But, also sad, because such stupid people are allowed to vote.
And being a mother is a problem because? As for her daughter what was she supposed to do, follow her everywhere day and night? It happens. Families deal with plenty of issues. Kids do some damn stupid things sometimes (except for yours I guess). But I do feel kinda sorry for you...reading your posts you sound so old and bitter. It’s such a sad way to go through life, always angry.
Cindie
Let's see. She was chosen to be the Republican Vice Presidential candidate by mistake?
Got History? Sarah Palin Seen as a GOP Rising Star August 29, 2008
You made absolutely no logical, substantive points to refute. Just an opinion based on unconnected, loose conjecture and a single unrelated fact.
Your ignorant, sophomoric “Palin cultist” smear is a tired straw man.
Blind vitriol is really not worth my time.
Have a nice day.
Where’s the BARF ALERT?
A thread from a grumpy old man. I’m referring to Rollins, of course, pissant.
Since when did the role of corporate spokesman embody gravitas? That’s a favorite claim of these “Palin is no Reagan” articles.
