Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

Well said.
I saw this story over on DU and wondered if someone would post it here. Now that it is it doesn’t surprise who did. I wonder what Ronald Reagan would have to say about the Ed Rollins types if he could speak for himself. But he can’t can he.
It doesn’t matter. There are 800 tv channels now. now you have to find away to break through all the noise and be unique. and she is doing that. it is unique for a poltician. just because it is different doesnt mean its wrong.
The anti-Palinistas are the ones who have a rather long history here of backing the wrong ( as in unelectable ) candidates.
It was overrated nastiness when Lord Bentson said it. Just hackneyed now.
We do NOT want the marriage to work.
I feel I need to remind you how the real world works.
In elections, the one with the most votes wins.
As conservatives, when we split our votes among several candidates (especially those who have no chance of winning) we allow the establishment RINO a chance to win with a plurality.
Purist idiots like you have far more culpability for the McCain nomination than the nebulous 'GOP' you blame...they don't get a vote, you do.
It will happen again this time...if we, as conservatives don't come together around ONE good conservative candidate, the establishment pick (Romney) will win with a plurality.
You can go to your grave proclaiming your conservative purity, the reality is people with your mindset are ignorant, easily manipulated tools of the establishment. Falcon up!
Traitor.
If she had not resigned he would be complaining about the “ethical clouds” and scandals that surrounded her...that corruption headlines daily sadly (wink-wink) have disqualified her from running.
Complete and utter BS.
This is like troops in a bunker, making their plans to charge the enemy, the “candidate” looks to her left and to her right and says; “let's roll”!
And she is the only one who emerges on the battlefield...and the sissies stay behind for fear of going down.
She dies, taking many of the enemy with her.
They live on to say...poor beautiful girl..she should have staying home in Alaska.
Present without comment.
Did you add the Star Wars caption? I hadn’t noticed that before.
Me likey.
Ed is a liberal hack!!!
liberal Republican elite!!!!
I really can't imagine any politician, living or dead, turning down 6 hour long campaign commercials where one could craft their image, reintroduce themselves to America, and get paid for doing it. It's quiet brilliant. Of course I don't hold my breath waiting on “Mitt's Massachusetts”
Did Sarah kill a bear before she was only 3?
goldstategop is a devout follower of Debbie Shussel who is jealous of Sarah Palin and thus, she writes viciously about her. Shussel is also banned from here, as are her nasty columns. Therefore, goldstategop follows suit.
It’s really that “sour grape” simple....lol.
Reagan would tell Ed Rollins to STFU if he were still with us.
That is just ridiculous. As Reagan said on many occasions, he didn't leave the Democrat party as much as the Democrat party left him (yep, everyone uses that line now, but it was HIS line). He was a ferocious anti-Communist from the very beginning, predating even his leadership of SAG.
Have you never read a Reagan biography? Any Reagan biography?
“Sarah Palins ability to learn and establish her leadership skills has been nothing less than of amazing.”
####
And frightening as Hell to the Commies, professional political and media class, as well as the hideously inferior thespian conservatives.
