When I was gowing up, there was (and still may be for all I know) a restaurant in Virginia Beach called "The Black Angus". They had a very large, lit, sign.
A favorite past-time of the local immature teenage male population was using a bb or pellet gun to shoot out the flourescent light behind the 'G' on their sign.
It was not uncommon in the summer time to see gigantic well-lit, block letters, reading:
BLACK
AN US
Floating in the night sky over a section of Pacific Avenue.
(Not that I would ever have engaged in such senseless vandalism, mind you...)
