Hoyer: Military should also see pay freeze
The Hill ^ | 11/29/10 | Russell Bermann

Posted on 11/29/2010 7:29:22 PM PST by GailA

The second-ranking House Democrat said Monday that President Obama’s move to freeze the pay of civilian federal employees should also be extended to military personnel.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said including the military would have increased savings and add “an element of fairness." He made the comments in a statement about he president’s announcement of a two-year pay freeze.

“While I appreciate that the president reduced the length of his proposed pay freeze from three to two years,” Hoyer said in a statement, “it would have produced significantly more savings had that sacrifice been shared between federal civilian and military personnel — with a strong exception for the members of our military and civilian employees risking their lives on our behalf in Afghanistan, Iraq, and anywhere else they are serving in harm's way.”

I dunno, maybe it actually might be a good idea. If the military could strike, then it’d focus a *LOT* of civilian attention on exactly what the military does.

And they’d be forced to think about how life would be without a military.

That’d probably screw a few liberals’ heads back on straight, once they pissed themselves at the thought of no one protecting their ‘free speech’.

Just a thought.

I get really irritated when someone bitches about military benefits.

The military has been very good to us and our kids for the past 27 years.

Believe me! We are grateful for the health care have we will when he retires in Aug.

For those saying that they should freeze officer pay, reduce retirement pay or cut medical benefits:

My Husband has EARNED his active duty pay and his retirement. He didn’t get where he is by sitting on his ass for the past 27 years from the time he was an E3 to O4. (He is an LDO)

And they have to purchase extra’s from that pay as well.

My son’s plane fare from his duty station for his Christmas block leave is more than he makes in one month.

Wrong!!! Yes we are broke but lets see, how about we start with Congress? We can start cutting their pay and bennies, let them live in barracks as well. Then we can move on to cutting all bennies to illegals. After that we can quit importing poverty from 3rd world illiterate countries and quit giving bennies to their families that follow through chain migration...........if you can’t feed yourself, I would suggest you stay home and don’t travel across the world for me to take care of you!!! How about we get rid of these stupid entities the the DOE, DHS, Dept. of Energy, etc.? And as for federal worker pay freezes, they should be cut in half first!!!

And last but not least, the military tightens their belt and makes the sacrifice the minute they raise their hand and swear to serve our country.

Hoyer: Military should also see pay freeze

What about Congress, Steny? How about a freeze on your pay? I notice you're not suggesting that.

My husband took an enormous pay cut starting in 2008 and I was laid off in Oct. I too took a pay cut, more than 50%. Even in these tough times, I can look for better pay, but the military does not have that option. They are committed, they cannot look for better opportunities! Not only that, they get paid a piddling amount as it is!

Gee, I wonder how much money we would save if we got rid of WIC for the illegals? Can’t afford to feed your kids? Don’t have them or go home!!!

LOL - those look like telephone numbers compared to when I was in ! Would you happen to know what the net of inflation raises have been for military since 10 years? I saw somewhere that federal workers were 3% per year each year for ten years net of inflation, so 4% compounding each year for ten years, aside from promotions, re-classifications, etc.

I probably know the answer but did the troops get raises like that these ten years? If they did, Hoyer might have a partial point but if they didn’t he hasn’t a leg to stand on.

“with a strong exception for the members of our military and civilian employees risking their lives on our behalf in Afghanistan, Iraq, and anywhere else they are serving in harm’s way.”

How thick can one person be? They are all serving in harm’s way in one way shape or form. Regardless of if they are in theater, they do train and somethimes real people die on US soil not in theater, but training in case they must go. What a dumbass!

Oh, Hoyer “supports” the troops, he excludes those in Afghanistan and other places ‘in harm’s way’...he wants to punish those OTHER military members (you know, the ones here in the STATES protecting us) because, you know, THEY DON’T COUNT. >:-(

Grrr. As a ‘military brat’ the first half of my life (dad was USNavy, stepdad was a DI in the Army and served in Korea and Vietname) I CAN NOT TELL YOU HOW FURIOUS THIS MAKES ME!!! >:-(

Civilians having never served don’t fully understand what our Military gives up or how UNDER paid they are for the job they are asked to do. Our police and fire rookies make many times more than our Military does. Under some presidents they saw very little pay raise or benefits. Many lower rank families had to go on food stamps and live in bad sections of towns you wouldn’t dream of living in.

Of all government employees the MILITARY is paid the LEAST! Even a lowly pencil pusher at some congress critters office makes more money and benefits than does the Military E-1-9. They also pay income taxes out of this pittance of a paycheck.

And they aren’t laying their lives on the line at a moments notice. Nor freezing their butts off on some Carrier, or when standing post on the DMZ, or roasted by heat and being bit by nasty disease carrying bug, or shot at or blown up in those two hell holes they are now serving in for the 3rd or 5th deployment in the ME.

Need to read some of the comments from the Hill article. Like this one.

........................
When my son in the Marines is making $1,800 a month and will likely be deployed in Afghanistan, this piece of crap Hoyer has the nerve to use the phrase, “fairness.”

How about paying Government employees the same rate as the military! Wouldn’t That be “FAIR”.
..........................

The below photo was taken May 2nd after the flood in Millington, TN home to Navy BUPERS. Over 200 families lost their homes and belongings in this flood.

http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=84882

Yes there are places in the Military to cut like not remodeling Commissaries that don’t need it, or repaving their parking lots that don’t need it either.

But NOT pay and benefits, those they earned though blood, sweat and tears and their lives. Freedom isn’t free. Our Military are the last line of defense between us and tyranny.
