Medical Marijuana: Prop 203's Passage Means a New Billion-Dollar Industry for Arizona

Phoenix -- In Arizona, you can ride a motorcycle without a helmet, conceal a handgun, and buy an AK-47. And soon, if you qualify, you'll be able to smoke a big, fat doobie. Legally. Proposition 203, the state's new medical-marijuana law, passed by the slimmest of margins once all the votes from the November 2 election were finally counted. But it passed by 4,341 votes, and now Arizona is on the verge of establishing a billion-dollar pot industry.

The official canvass of votes from the election will take place on November 29, and the state Department of Health Services has 120 days from that point to create reasonable regulations for marijuana stores, known as dispensaries. (In other states, clerks behind the counters of such places are called "bud-tenders.") No more than 20 days after that, the DHS must begin accepting applications from "patients."

What all this means is that in a few months, card-holding pot users will be able to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana at any given time.

Cops will be prohibited from arresting these patients for their weed. And companies that require urine tests will be prohibited from discriminating against card-holding workers or applicants simply because they tested positive for marijuana.

Cardholders may begin growing up to 12 pot plants immediately, indoors, as long as no dispensaries are open within 25 miles of their residences. If a store is within that range, the patient can no longer grow his or her own but can buy up to 2.5 ounces every two weeks.

This won't be Southern California, with more dispensaries than Starbucks. Only one dispensary for every 10 pharmacies is allowed. For now, that means a statewide total of 124. But that's plenty.

Before the election, Republican Governor Jan Brewer criticized the measure, predicting "compassion quickly will turn to capitalism."

Perish the thought.

retards.

Quacks will have kids on pot for laziness and toe-jam and parents who refuse will be jailed for denying “healthcare”.

Pot is about as medical as the Native Medicine Man

What should be interesting is when the cartel wars begin to target these stores, their owners and the people who do any business with them within a given “territory”. That will be the harshest form of education a liberal can get on both this and the border security issue.

Arizona is working very hard on setting up how this is going to be initiated and implemented in an effort to not have the same problems that have happened in CA. I am a nurse and I have seen how medical THC is very beneficial in certain illnesses....it has been legalized in oral form for many years (Marinol)...it just doesn’t work as effectively as the “pipe”.....and, no, I am not a pothead....I support it for those that it will benefit in their disease processes...not for entertainment or play....although I dare say that alcohol is more of a danger in our society.

Well,,, An old friend of mine, in his Seventies, has horrible diabetic neuropathy(sp?). His medicine does not work at all. Although he is a musician/songwriter, (a number one song from the Sixties, that has since been used in many movies) he had never done any illicit drugs. A real straight arrow. His son, watching his Father in great discomfort, suggested a couple of tokes. My friend, in great pain, took the chance. A couple of puffs, plus his medicine, worked! He could function for about eight hours with no discomfort. He’s gotten his life back.

Okay, which diseases is it approved for? What does it actually cure or treat? Because in Kalipornia they can get it for toe-jam.

I can personally verify what you said about Marinol. During cancer treatments last year, smoking weed was the only thing that helped me. I tried Marinol (it is synthetic) and it just made me high without relieving my nausea, vomiting, and pain.

There is something in the smoke that is not in the pill (actually it is a gel ball filled with oil.)

Bravo to AZ. People who can be helped by it should not have to buy it from the creepy guy down the street like I did.

And to those who think it is a bad idea, I hope you never need it.

If they made alcohol illegal, how many people do you think would demand it for medical reasons?

Maybe a few million at least?

As an aside, the Germans are now including both Vitamin B-1 and the OTC supplement Alpha Lipoic Acid as part of the standard regimen for diabetes.

The Vitamin B-1 is very important because, with the increased urination by diabetics, they deplete their albumin, lack of which is now being associated with many of their renal and bladder problems.

The Alpha Lipoic Acid, or ALA, is proving to be essential to help prevent, and in some cases even reverse, diabetic neuropathy. And it is also believed to increase circulation in the extremities, also a major plus for diabetics.

As a note, I have seen ALA for sale in combination with the amino acid L-Carnatine, which I gather is also used for diabetic neuropathy, but I have no studies as to its effectiveness.

More info:

A problem with Vitamin B-1 is that typically it is water soluble, so is rapidly lost from the body. However, there is a supplement called benfotiamine, a lipid/fat soluble derivative of vitamin B1 (thiamine).

In the presence of allicin, the active principle of garlic, the water-soluble thiamine hydrochloride is transformed into a lipid-soluble compound. According to studies, as an oral supplement, benfotiamine is absorbed more rapidly and for longer periods than water-soluble thiamine. And its unique structure enabled it to pass directly through cell membranes, readily crossing the intestinal wall and being taken straight to the cell.

As a result, the body absorbs benfotiamine better than thiamine itself and levels of thiamine remain higher for longer. Thiamine absorption from benfotiamine is about five times higher than conventional thiamine supplements.

Benfotiamine was developed in Japan in the late 1950s to treat alcoholic neuropathy, sciatica, and other painful nerve conditions. Japanese researchers patented the process in 1962. It has been used for over a decade in Germany.

Whatever it takes Semper. My mom has a number of ailments, and if she wanted it, I’d get it for her. Only problem is, she’s afraid it would make her want to start smoking cigarettes again. Just don’t understand people who would deny others something that OBVIOUSLY WORKS. Pot is not bad people, mmkay? Don’t even start an argument with me about the dangers of weed, don’t care what you think. I’ve seen it help too many people to care, and I won’t respond. It should be legal, period, so you don’t have to buy it from the creepy guy down the street.

You know the Feds are not going to let it happen. They are once again going to claim “commerce clause” to override the State.

I have no problem what-so-ever of making it legal for medical purposes. They problem is that people push for more than that and when they do it hits that sweet spot that people will vote against.
