Media Lies About Sarah Palin Korea Comments (Global Hit on Palin)
Thursday, November 25, 2010 | Kristinn

Posted on 11/25/2010 8:41:56 AM PST by kristinn

A hit piece by a liberal blogger about a slip of the tongue by Sarah Palin regarding the crisis on the Korean peninsula has become an international news story that is being spun to impugn Palin's credibility as a potential presidential candidate.

Palin has been dishonestly quoted out of context in dozens of articles and broadcast reports as saying on the Glenn Beck radio show on Wednesday, "We gotta stand with our North Korean allies."

Here, in context, is what Palin actually said (transcription by Kristinn):

Glen Beck: "Sarah you said, you said in the last few days that you are considering a run for president. And uh, polls show that you would probably win the Republican nomination. How would you handle a situation like just developed in, in North Korea?"

Palin: "Well, North Korea, this is stemming from I think a greater problem when we're all sittin' around asking, "Oh no, what are we gonna do?" and we're not having a lot of faith that the White House is gonna come out with a strong enough policy to, um, sanction what it is that North Korea is gonna do. So this speaks to a bigger picture here that certainly scares me in terms our national security policies. But obviously, gotta stand with our North Korean allies. We're bound to by, by treaty."

Beck: "South Korea."

Palin: "We're also bound by, yeah, we're also bound by prudence to stand with our, our South Korean allies. Yes. And, uh, you know to remind North Korea, well, we're not gonna reward bad behavior and we're not gonna walk away. And we do need to press China to do more to increase the pressure on North Korea."

The smear started with liberal blogger Oliver Willis who posted an entry with the title, AUDIO: Sarah Palin: "We Gotta Stand With Our North Korean Allies. The blog post did not transcribe Palin's interview with Beck, it just had a snarky comment, "Genius. Absolute genius. When Glenn Beck is correcting you on foreign policy, well… genius."

Willis included the audio clip in his post which this transcription is based on. As can be seen, it was a simple slip of the tongue. But, because of how Willis disingenuously framed it, the slip has become "truth" to once again be used to smear Palin as ignorant of foreign affairs.

The hit piece was picked up by Mediaite, a site founded by former MSNBCer Dan Abrams, which titled their hit piece, Sarah Palin - North Korean Allies.

Mediaite also posted the audio clip. But even with the evidence that the comment was clearly a slip of the tongue, Mediaite smeared Palin as ignorant by quoting her out of context rather than publishing the entire exchange with Beck.

For good measure, Mediaite brought back a previous smear of Palin that claimed in 2008 when she was selected to be John McCain's running mate she did not know Korea was divided between North and South.

The Weekly Standard came to Palin's defense last night with a piece that chided her critics for the smear.

That did not stop the smear from going global, however. A Google News search shows nearly one hundred articles accusing Palin of not knowing that South Korea is our ally.

Wire services, broadcast networks and newspapers across America and the globe have gleefully picked up the smear.

The BBC piled on today with an article that said, "Her slip of the tongue over North Korea will provide more ammunition for critics who say she doesn't have sufficient knowledge or experience for high office."

The Times of India headlined their article, Sarah Palin's Latest Verbal Gaffe - North Korea an Ally.

It is a testament to Palin's global reach and influence that such a simple slip would garner worldwide headlines and be used by her enemies here and abroad to smear her.

However, the truth must be told and the media once more shamed for their duplicitious reporting.

“If she learns to overcome her urge to to respond, then think, she will kick their butts all the way to the white house. if not, she will be easily marginalized.”

This is a seemingly small, but in fact huge difference. That said, we must defend Sarah Palin, whom the socialist pressers love to savage, when she has 1 gaffe in 50 statements. But your idea is well stated.

I agree with you and wished she would travel to S.Korea not for photo ops and autographs but a honest to God situation briefing and the same of Iraq and Afghanistan.

“There is zero equity when to comes to such how the Press approaches misstatements.”

We have the issue of the socialist propagandist press, and then there’s the issue of Gov. Palin’s preparation. I really liked American in Tokyo’s discussion in post #14 above about Palin traveling internationally. Solid approach to silence all sorts of critics.

Like Odumbo has not made any mistakes in what he has said in the campaign mode or even as the preceived president of the US.

Come now the media is looking for Mrs. Sarah Palin to say anything that can be construed as a royal screw up Talking about North korea and South Korea and suddenly a slip of the tongue that North Korea ia our ally. Lets see Odumbo has said
- there are 57 states in the US.
- his Muslim faith and corrected by George Stephanopoulos
- Corpsman pronunced as corpseman
- how about his extreme distaste for America.
- how about the problems with Odumbo and the DOJ New Panther Party fiasco.
- oh yes Odumbo gives the queen of Great Britain an Ipod with his speeches on it, and yes the Prime Minister gets DVDs that only work in North America.

Gee in the USA we have such an intelligent president that whenever he makes any mistake the compliant media is right ther to sing his praises. By the way the media in America truly does suck.

“This was a golden opportunity to show POTUS-worthy acumen and all we got was tweeting.”

A question: Do you think she can adequately prepare for foreign policy nuances from here? Or do you think she is unsalvagable? Again, I’ll defer to AiT’s post #14, which states the case very well.

“You and some others might not be satisfied that she didn’t give a lengthy exposition, but the media is trying to hang her with her slip of the tongue.”

The media is especially egregious here. Gov. Palin does have the general issue of preparedness for handling foreign policy and being our Commander in Chief. She needs to work hard in that area - and as AiT suggests, now is the time to do so.

I made the exact same mistake when discussing NK/SK with my wife the other day. She corrected me. I knew the difference but still said it incorrectly.

With an invitation like that, I’d bet Sarah WOULD come out to the front line in South Korea, with a parka, ear muffs and her ears open.

As to the quote, the media let Obama off when Stephenopolous corrected him about “my Muslim faith”
but do they give the same treatment to Palin?

Frankly, a photo-op at Camp Bonifas will not give anyone a deeper understanding of the Korean issue. There are plenty of resources available to all of us if we want to spend a bit of time researching them.

It has been years since I've been in the DMZ (although I will be back there in December) but my knowledge of the issue is demonstrably deeper than hers. The same is true of other freepers.

I'd wager that my understanding of the bloodless coup in Kyrgzistan this past year is also deeper than hers. And I've never been there. Just in case you don't know...Putin orchestrated a take-over that had the end result of denying our forces their largest airbase for transit into and support of our troops in Afghanistan.

I'd bet the same regarding the problems in Colombia and other global hotspots. And I know that there are freepers whose knowledge surpasses mine.

The point is that she is woofing about being able to beat obama and be our President. She had better walk away from the limelight for a while and crack a book.

Remember when SP stated "party like it's 1773"?

The media was going all ga-ga over that line, thinking that it was a gaffe, not knowing or realizing that 1773 was the year of the Boston Tea Party.

This alone shows what hoops the media will jump through to demonize SP.

Grow up with all this childish troll stuff, only a private citizen? She would be a VIP that is a frontrunner for the 2012 GOP Presidential nomination, a Vice Presidential candidate only 2 years ago, and a holder of the Alaskan Governor security clearance only 16 months ago.

I think that she could get her visit.

Grow up yourself. At this point Palin is nothing but a private citizen. Any request for higher level briefings would have to be cleared by chain of command and guess who’s at the top of that. Even nominated candidates don’t get the same level of access as people already in place...ah, you know what? you’re an idiot and I’m done with you.
