N. Korea fires artillery towards S. Korean island, official says
SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired several rounds of artillery towards South Korean waters and an island near the tense west sea border, the South's military said.
The North's artillery shells fell at 2:34 p.m. in the South's waters off the island of Yeonpyeong, some of them landing directly on the island, said Col. Lee Bung-woo, spokesman at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The South's military responded with its artillery firing.

Hmmm, I wonder if and how many Paladin self propelled howitzers we have there in SK, I’m a tanker hobbyist and the Paladin to me with its “time to target” firing can lob I think as many as 6 shells at different angles, and through the difference of angles and speed all hit at the same time.
LONDON: Seoul wants to avoid worsening tensions after North Korean artillery attacked a South Korean island on Tuesday but would react "much harder" militarily if the strikes escalated, a South Korean government adviser said.
Chung Min Lee, an ambassador-level foreign ministry expert who advises the government on security, told Reuters in a telephone interview he did not see the situation escalating into war but South Korea's stance would change if matters worsened.
Asked if he agree with a remark by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that there was a 'colossal danger' of an escalation in fighting on the Korean peninsula, he replied: "It all depends on what further provocations North Korea chooses to mount.
"I don't foresee this escalating into major war on the peninsula, but if North Korea decides they want to push us a little bit further back by additional attacks on our territory, then we will respond militarily, including the possibility of taking out their artillery sites with our aircraft.
You mentioned Gen. MacArthur. My recollection is that he would have taken care of the job except for being overruled by his Democratic CIC...is this not right?
I suppose there is more than enough asset to vaporize artillery sites responsible for today’s attack.

Basically a prayer to our South Korean cousins, so loving, such a big Christian nation. I pray God will protect her in these perilous times. Too many flare ups through out the world for wars not to spring up elsewhere emboldened by this craziness.
Tiger likes rooster: I do not understand the transliteration of the Korean word,”staring.” Is this a usage of observation or a higher more “focused” staring? My Korean is not so good.
To be honest I doubt the US has the resources to fight on the Korean peninsula right now. Spread to thing, and our material is breaking down.
Don’t forget that McArthur managed to be completely surprised by the Chinese intervention, despite numerous warnings, thus getting thousands of Americans killed.

North Korea is a thorn in China’s side, if there was an easy way to get rid of the problem, the Chinese would do it. Their nightmare is to have millions of NoKo refugees streaming into China.
South Korea is in the same predicament as well, if they somehow beat NoKo, then they will have their own issues with refugees.
Eventually South Korea and China will have to become partners to solve the North Korea problem.

Mac got fired. I had several relatives in the Pacific during WWII and Korea. None of them like Mac. The ones in Europe thought their commanders could walk on water.

Probably for two reasons - Civilian involvement, and Korea no longer has any plausible deniability. Remember, it was weeks before SK asserted in was probably a NK torpedo. This, OTOH is immediately identifiable and undeniably an unprovoked military attack resulting in civilian causalities.
I'm not sure how they ignore this, and maintain any credibility with their own people, let alone North Korea, moving forward.

The dearth of words from Zhang Xinsen appeared to underscore the difficulties China faces in dealing with the aftermath of the indiscriminate attack its communist ally launched earlier Tuesday.

- - Chinese foreign ministry dropping the ball with this one? No response likely means either the Chinese weren’t aware this was coming and are trying to formulate a response OR they are purposefully keeping quiet for some unknown (but can’t be good) reason. Either way - bad mojo IMO - -
