'Sarah Palin's Alaska': The Most Expensive Campaign Commercial Ever?

Any remaining doubts that Sarah Palin is the most media savvy politician out there should have been erased entirely with last week's premiere of her new TLC show Sarah Palin's Alaska (SPAlaska!).

Back in March when rumors that Palin and producer Mark Burnett were shopping a reality show first surfaced speculation that the proposed series would be about Palin's family were quickly shot down. Two weeks ago during a spashy premiere party for the show, hosted by Discovery, the savvy team promoting the show insisted to attendees it would not be political. Of course, within minutes of last week's premiere, in which (blurred out) write Joe McGinniss -- who has rented out the house next door to the Palin's in order to research his new book -- featured prominently, both claims were quickly proven untrue. The show is nothing if not an extended political commericial for (decisive! adventurous!) Sarah Palin, starring her family members, each of whom get their own shout-out in the opening credits.

Conclusion? Essentially Palin has convinced TLC to pay her six figures every week to convince the country she is presidential material (making Mark Burnett her Karl Rove?). Or, at the very least, she possesses the kind of decisive backbone required to stun a Halibut with a billy club (part of last night's mother/daughter day with Bristol) and by extension her political opponents.

The result is apparently enough to convince Frank Rich that she has a shot at being President.

Thanks to the in-kind contribution of this “nonpolitical” series, Palin needn’t join standard-issue rivals like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Haley Barbour and Tim Pawlenty in groveling before donors and primary-state operatives to dutifully check all the boxes of a traditional Republican campaign. Palin not only has TLC in her camp but, better still, Murdoch.

It was satire, and I and at least 1 other, thought it was hilarious.

I loved it. Great show.

No, but it may be the most PROFITABLE campaign commercial ever! HAHAHAHAHA! Lib heads are exploding all over the Lower 48! Not only is Palin popular, but she's making the lib-approved TLC network money doing it!

You have it exactly right. If Sarah Palin is such a moron then what are they wringing their hands about? I’ve noticed that those who dislike Sarah are those who dislike us. How dare we, the common people, think of electing someone who is of the same cloth as ourselves, as our founders, as the very settler’s who colonized this nation? They instead want some one who is chosen by them. Who is deemed credible and serious enough because they have placed their stamp of approval on them. Take Mitt Romney for example. He has worked for Republican and even conservative candidates but where has he stuck his neck out for the issues that matter to us? I can’t find it. If anything he has stood in Sarah’s shadow while letting her fight the fight. If it had been up to them the line would not have been held on health care and cap and trade instead they would’ve been offering their own version of those bad wrong headed bills. God knows Mitt Romney signed into law a piece of legislation not unlike Obamacare. That alone should disqualify him as a credible candidate for anyone who is really a conservative but a lot who make such claims are not. They are something else entirely. If the Republican party leadership wants to save itself a lot of grief they should get behind Palin early but they won’t. Instead they will make her even more powerful a force even as they seek to minimize her.

I visited Homer in early June 2010. Homer is a bit off the Alaskan tourism trail but it is a nice place to visit for 5-7 days if you don’t mind the drive or waiting for a flight. Homer is a great base to fish for halibut, cod, and salmon, bear viewing in Katmai, or kayaking on the Kenai peninsula.

I am thinking the trip to Big River Lake (first show) also originated from Homer.

[I read DB’s comment as satire.]

I thought it was obvious. And I’ve been here since ‘98 under different SNs.

...she quit halfway through her first term and shows up in the audience of ‘Dancing with the Stars’

Er....we have a president who quit half way through his first term as Senator and showed up on American Idol, David Letterman and Comedy Central. So what the beef George?

BTW-Sarah made 8 million bucks, TLC gets 5 million views for each episode, and the TV audience finally gets to see something worth while on TV besides grumpy liberals.

I agree...the first one was good but the second one was better. I love she unapologetically shoot, clubs and guts fish and generally doesn’t kowtow to the politically correct crowd. Can you IMAGINE any other candidate playing up and being proud of the fact that they are gun owners?

I agree the show is a real boost to her candidacy but it has a nice standalone quality to it, too. It and Going Rogue before it are a great revelation as to how remarkable an ordinary person can be. She is going to BE our president, I am convinced. She was born to the job, but more importantly we were born to hire her for it.

Seems to me that decisive backbone is a prime qualification for the presidency. Something the alien Usurper totally lacks (ref: James Carville on the redistribution of presidential cojones).

Thank God for Sarah. Both shows were a real breath of fresh air in the real American. Can't wait for the rest of the shows. Bristol was fantastic. What a gutsy girl.

What goes largely unnoticed is the fact that they, all of them, are NOT actors. They are what you see. Their comments are really theirs not ghost writers' like those who author books by a certain -resident I could mention.

It’s the interaction between Todd and Sarah that my wife and I love. They tease each other, they have byplay, they’re just so… normal. We can relate to them.

And Todd Palin = Captain America. Ha! Love it. They seem like people you’d want to be around.

Fun show. Fun family.
