On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would give the Attorney General the right to shut down websites with a court order if copyright infringement is deemed central to the activity of the site regardless if the website has actually committed a crime. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) is among the most draconian laws ever considered to combat digital piracy, and contains what some have called the nuclear option, which would essentially allow the Attorney General to turn suspected websites off.
COICA is the latest effort by Hollywood, the recording industry and the big media companies to stem the tidal wave of internet file sharing that has upended those industries and, they claim, cost them tens of billions of dollars over the last decade.
Ironic isn’t it? The far left was screaming “police state”, because Bush wanted to listen to conversations while seeking terrorists. I wonder how they will feel about this intrustion.

They just want to get along and be loved by the MSM.
Any Republican support should be tallied for '12 and beyond.
Everyone says the Communists don't learn. I agree and one-up them, Republicans don't either!
Thanks for this alert! Things get more scary every day..!
I’m sure that politicians and activists will abuse the hell out of this law.
Cornyn voted YES to approve it in committee, but his office says he will vote NO in the full Senate.
Are you sure Kyl will vote YES in the full Senate? A phone call may be more effective than email.
The radical Dem controlled Senate with RINO cohorts makes it happen.
It has been a long time since someone called me "son" (except my 85 year old father). I turn 63 next month.
I was trying say that the reason it came out of committee was the revised wording required a "judge" to make the determination for shutting down a website for the specific purpose of copyright. I know that "copyright infringement" is a vague term, and I know that there are some "terrible" judges who are shills to this bunch of Commies. But in my opinion, the appearance of some check & balance is why it came out of committee. Right or wrong.
And on the subject of (RINO) Senator Cornyn, he is 4 years from facing an election but he will be toast then.
So this means I can go to Demo Underground, post something that is copyrighted and get them shut down? COOL!
Half the judiciary committee was cosponsor of this bill.
But Hatch is probably the one who wrote it, or rather passed it on from his bosses in the entertainment industry to Leahy.
OK, thanks.
When I called Cornyn’s office, I told them that the average digital pirate is probably more ethical than Eric Holder, so if they really believe that the AG needs the power to shut down websites (which is very dubious IMO), at least wait until a better AG is in power.
Hmmmm, Fidonet over Internet? If Internet is available, instantly make encrypted connections to Fidonet servers for the data shipments. If not, wait for telephone connectivity. Users would only notice loss of the Internet when things get really slow.
I was an avid user of Fidonet way back when. I’d log on and get my messages, read and answer everything, and log on and send the replies (to save on phone bills, you didn’t have to be on the whole time, and receive and send took only a minute or so). It works, you just have to keep the conversations in your head for a day or two.
Latest news, Senator Ron Wyden has put a hold on this bill, effectively killing it for this year.
A Democrat?
Where are the Republicans? Too busy passing it out of committee?

So if something is to be published in England, you have to get permission from . . . whom? The Crown?
I received it in an email ab out a year ago. I have no clue who wrote it. It’s in my profile.
I didn’t write it. Someone sent it to me in an email.
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—
We have a winner! Yes, they want complete and total control of information. Welcome to China II.
Hannity stated tonight that BO is planning to use Exec Orders and regulations to pass his agenda if Congress won’t.
