The decision by the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to endorse the Utah Compact, a document that urges states to stay out of the illegal immigration issue, is likely a pragmatic call for Utah's predominant religion. Many of the church's Hispanic members in the U.S. are illegals. LDS leaders want to see that their rights are protected.
It's our opinion that the decision by the LDS Church makes sense. The federal government's failure to do something about illegal immigration, as well as the business community's passive-aggressive support of the cheap, exploitable labor pool, is worthy of disgust and outrage. Nevertheless, states and local governments do not have the resources or, in many cases, training to solve the problem of millions of illegals staying in the U.S.

I found it very interesting that the editorial board of that paper would actually say what they said about illegals.
As if Mormonism is above the law and therefore wants to protect them.

Is this generally a conservative or lib paper/site? In your experience, have they come down on the side of the church more often than not or vice versa?
I find their use of generalizations and talking points in their editorial a fail as well. “The state can’t afford it, slave labor, etc.”

Will any of you challenge SLC on this or will you bow to your overlords and submit because the “thinking has already been done”?
I was born and raised on a dairy farm near Ogden. I read the Standard Examiner obituaries every day to see if my name is listed and to see who of my friends might be there.
In general terms they have always been slightly to the left except when it comes to the church...Then they follow. Once in a while they take a point of view to expose the bad, bad Mormons that have gotten in trouble.
This time they are on the team for the crutch. No doubt about it.

Those who come into this country illegally make hard choices, Garcia said. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bans all political discussion from its pulpits and young missionaries are not allowed to read newspapers or watch television, so they may not even know of the intense political debates swirling about them. They likely know little about Romney's candidacy or positions on issues.

This is SO convenient...just days after the hispanic vote in Nevada went overwhelmingly for Harry Reid.
Those "rights" for illegals plus the lock-step mormon vote assured that dingy harry would still be in the driver's seat in the Senate.
Pragmatism, you bet. Keep the highest-ranked mormon in the government in place and assure the continuation of tithing from illegals pouring into mormon church coffers. not to mention the pool of illegals available for mormon missions.
The source of that loud, thumping sound the bus made. . . .
Oh don't worry. The Book of Mormon promises that with their righteousness, our Lamanite brothers will become white and delightsome...just give it some time. ;)

We rec’d “revelation”® that we’re supposed to ignore that tenet when it’s convenient and right now, it’s convenient. It might have won us an election in NV, keeping a mormon in a high position in our gov’t.
It’s enabling us to send illegals, oops, saints, aka “gods in embryo”® to other latin american countries to encourage more of these fine folks to leech off the American taxpayer. Afterall, what’s more important? Following the laws and making sure we can take care of our own here in our own country or “grow the church”®?
So don’t you worry one little hair on your head, we’re doing all the thinking, just keep that tithing coming in and don’t forget to patronize our new mall in SLC.

As Mexico sinks deeper into the chaos of the possibly al qaeda controlled drug wars, it is inhumane to bus the illegal Mexicans back into that meat grinder. We must find a way to assimilate these illegals who want to become American citizens. For those who have no intention on becoming American citizens, then they are the meat for the drug war grinder, by their own choice ... but them back, but make the effrot to distinguish between the two groups of illegals. It’s the only huamne thing to do. And yes, I can see la Raza on the convoy of busses if you please.

Well, yes, I know, but that wouldn't be faith promoting, now would it? ;)
For what it’s worth, being a “non-practicing Mormon,” I get a “unwelcome visit” from “someone from the Church” on occasion. One such visit occurred just before the recent election. I told the guy I was considering asking formally to have my name removed as a member because of the Church’s support for Harry Reid (which is a true statement if you care to do some research). He told me that the local congregation “ward” could not understand why the church had not already excommunicated Reid for his various stands that are diametrically opposite to church doctrine. He claimed that the local disgust for Reid was almost universal. Again, this is California, not Utah so you can take the data point with that caveat.
